Interpreting song lyrics

Inspired somewhat by a thread that’s running about a song by The Beautiful South, and what people take the lyrics to mean. I read it and thought I have never considered what they mean. Then I got to thinking and realised I literally never take meanings from songs. I just like the sound of them and sing along mostly oblivious, even to the most obvious words.

Anybody else or am I an outlier?

The meaning behind the lyrics is the biggest appeal of a song for me. But I don’t think it’s wrong not to think about that, if you like a song.

David Cameron is famous for liking The Eton Rifles. It's an anti upper-class privilege song. He always was a thick twat.

For me the lyrics and their meaning is what grips me about certain songs.
But even bands don't always 'listen' to the words they're playing.
I heard that members of Joy Division (leader singer/songwriter Ian Curtis tragically took his life age 23) only started reading his lyrics after his death ... only then they noticed how dark and sad they were.

I just read that he is a ‘thick twat’ for doing as I do in that scenario so not sure how of you apply the logic to him it wouldn’t apply to me.

Same. Although I am partial to a blast of old school 90s dance anthems in amongst my Spotify list of amazing lyrical songs 🙈😂
