I have an MRI later, and i have a double helix piercing i need to take out.. last time i had some plastic piercings, but i can't find them

I have ordered some more but they may not make it. Can anyone suggest anything else i can use in my piercing holes?

If you don’t have time to order and receive the plastic or silicon ones then surely it’s only a very short time and the holes won’t heal up?

When I had an operation last year, I put simple, easily removable things in, took them out quickly at the last minute, then put them back in as soon as I got back to the ward!

Look for bioflex piercing retainers. I use lots of these for my scans. Off Amazon

You can get silicone retainers from pretty much any piercing shop. But if they're healed they shouldn't close in the time it takes to get an mri. If you're in hospital now and your scan is today, ask one of the nurses /hcas if you can have the plastic tubing from a couple of cannulas to keep the holes open

Amazon same day?

Lomonald · 29/09/2026 12:32

It won't close in 30 or so minutes that an MRI takes. I had cartlidge piercing years ago took them out and then back in fine after an mri.

Just take it out before and put in back in after. I'm sure you don't have superhuman skin OP.

It’ll be fine, won’t heal in that time.

Depending on the scan, it will probably take from 15-20 minutes (for things like a routine head scan, a knee, or one part of the spine) to an hour for longer scans with contrast or multiple areas. The piercings are not going to heal in that time. You may be able to keep the piercings in, but it depends on the radiographers and policies at the place you're being scanned, and it can affect image quality if they're scanning the area with the piercing. If you're having a completely different area scanned, they may check it with a magnet and just warn you that metals can heat up, and to squeeze the buzzer if needed.

I can’t imagine you’ll have issues with the holes closing up from the piercings being taken out for half an hour, give or take? I have loads of piercings and recently had to have no end of scans etc, and just took them out, then put them in again at the end. I don’t think you need to get overly stressed about this.
