Has anyone successfully painted over wallpaper?

Friends are coming to visit from abroad at fairly short notice. The wallpaper in our spare room is really tired and faded (as it was when they last visited 5 years ago!)
We still haven’t got round to decorating because there’s a chance that when we remove the wallpaper, plaster will come with it so it becomes a bigger, longer job.
Eventually we will need to do it properly but even in the unlikely event we could find a plasterer and decorator at such short notice, there really isn’t enough time.

I’ve been consudering a stop gap which is painting the wallpaper (it’s flat, not anaglypta or wood chip). We could do this ourselves fairly quickly.
I’ve googled and believe this can be done successfully if you use a special wallpaper sealant first so that the paint doesn’t soak into the paper, improving the finish and stopping the moisture from making the paper peel.
Has anyone done this and had decent results?
if anyone is willing to post photos of the finished result that would be appreciated.
thanks

I’ve done it loads of times. Generally it looks fine for a couple of years but after that the edges of the paper start peeling up and showing through- but that doesn’t bother me because at that point I’ll remove it all and start again. I’ve never used any special sealant or paint or anything, just normal matt Dulux and gone for it.

I have done it often it’s like using a lining paper and it’s always been fine.

I've done it when I was a hard-up student and it's OK for a temporary fix.

Yes, lots of times. If the paper is lifting then you need to make sure it's stuck down before you paint it.

Loads of times

The only thing to bear in mind is that if you use a pre-sealant then the wallpaper will be a very difficult to get off when you do want to remove it.

Yeah I was wondering about the sealant making it difficult to remove. Thanks to all the responses think we’ll just go straight for the painting.
Thanks everyone.

It’s fine. Just use normal emulsion. Our whole house has painted on wallpaper. It works like lining paper.
