What is reasonable for house renovation next door - noise

We are semi detached in a suburban area. Next door was bought as a buy to let about 3 years ago. They did a bit of decorating and fitted a new kitchen and tenants moved in within about 3 months. All good. Nice neighbours.

They moved out after the first year and the house has been empty since. However, the landlords seem to have decided to completely renovate. New bathrooms, kitchen, complete garden redesign. New boiler and radiators. Apparently some issues with the plumbing.

This work has been going on now since May. It never ends. There is constant noise. Sawing, banging. The landscape gardener used an angle grinder to hand cut about 100 bricks to edge the path. There is basically one guy doing most of the work.

He’s very nice. DH has chatted to him. They wanted to replace the fence which is technically ours so they paid 70% of the cost of the materials and he fitted it for free.

Now I am a fairly chill person but I am really sick of it now. It’s constant from about midday to 8pm 6 days a week. Today the drilling was so loud and when that stopped some hammering started. It was noisy for about five hours non stop.

Ive really nicely asked him to turn the music down a couple of times but it always comes back a few days later. Is it unreasonable to ask him how long until they finish and maybe contact the landlord to explain how disruptive it is?

I promise I’m not a moaney old thing but I’ve lost perspective.

You can ask how long it is expected to last but complaining to the landlord about how disruptive it is seems pointless. They aren’t going to stop doing work that needs doing just because you don’t like noise during permitted working hours.

Nothing wrong with asking the landlord how much longer it's going to take, or asking them to turn the radio down.

But other than that, the landlord isn't going to give up before the end of the project because you (understandably) feel it's going on too long.

I have just lived through over three months of the same. Sometimes starting at 7am and even a couple of Sundays. The main worker when I complained was ignorant and arrogant, the homeowner apologeic and useless.

I have no advice, but you have my sympathy.

Honestly it’s annoying but you’re going to just have to let it be. One day it will be your turn to have renovation work and the neighbours will have be ok with it. It is annoying though I do sympathise with you!

I know you’re all right. Although they often work until 8pm and I thought 6pm was permitted work hours.

Hopefully it will be done soon. Our houses are not large. I can’t imagine there’s much more to do.

They aren’t allowed to work with noise before 7am and after 6pm and not on weekends either!!!!

you need to be firmer about time they are working and go and have a word and say this is a nightmare for you and how long is it going to go on for and also mention the illegal noise times and also the loud radio on top of it

You have my sympathy! We had 15 months of this, mostly early mornings, evenings and weekends, when a guy bought the house next to ours to do up in his own time alongside his day-job in property maintenance. It went on all through the first year of COVID when we were working/studying from home and he stripped the house back to bare brick and completely remodelled it. It was absolute torture at times - he was very apologetic but it was so, so loud. (Then he moved in for a couple of years, with his very shouty girlfriend and a dog who screeched endlessly whenever they were out of sight 😫)
