Why do some people drop rubbish or fly tip near home?

I would like to hear from people who litter and / or fly tip as I want to understand what goes on in your head / drives you to do it?

Where I live (London) littering seems to have increased in the last year or two. Some shops down our street have closed, and they have turned into HMO's. Which is fine by me, people need to live somewhere. What I find totally unacceptable, is stepping out of your front door and dropping your rubbish bags right there, on the street! Foxes come along at night, and then it's everywhere. It is really disgusting, I'm taking baby nappies, food, general household waste. These flats have big bins behind the buildings, seems that it is too much effort to spend a minute or two to walk around to the bins and dispose of waste.

I have noticed similar situations in other areas, often flats above shops. They put their litter out on the street to get strewn everywhere. I DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!

It is literally on their own doorstep too. Do people want to live like this? Do they not see it?! Are you immune to stepping in rotten food and human waste?

Please, if you do this kind of thing occasionally or regularly, help me understand why?

I don’t do it but I live in a private building with very strict rules on rubbish disposal.

good heavens, I spend several minutes every week sorting my rubbish into plastic, paper, glass etc.

others leave vacuum cleaners, pushchairs, mattresses and even a full on air conditioner in the bin cupboard. Our property manager regularly sends frustrated emails to everyone urging us not to dump old junk in there in the dead of night but they do it anyway because they think no one will ever know it’s them!

very annoying behaviour and incredibly selfish for many reasons

Thanks for your reply @malloryknox123, I guess I was a bit too hopeful in getting a conversation going on this subject!

Interesting to hear that even in a private building with strict rules, people are still lazy and want someone else do deal with their waste. Unfortunately, it is something that seems to cut across socioeconomic backgrounds, at least to some extent. My sister also lives in a really nice block of flats, and also complains from time to time about people dumping odd things, just hoping it will be taken care of.

I don't, but it's probably because rubbish collection is so rubbish. In some countries, they collect weekly or even daily, and take everything left out. Here there's lots of rules that are difficult for some people, and not everyone is physically able to go to the tip.
You mention more modern issues, but older people say fly-tipping in general was far less common when the bin men came weekly, and took everything left by the bins. Not getting into a debate with people who love the sorting rituals of today, and I follow the rules and wouldn't fly-tip, just answering as to why people do it.

It’s because they are thick.

People fly tip because they are lazy and scummy and don't think rules apply to them. It doesn't matter if other countries do things differently, if you move somewhere you find out what the rules of that country are, it's called communicating with your neighbours. Not hard at all.

There are flats about 50 yards away from me where the residents regularly fly tip and I as regularly report it to the council. They must be as thick as mince to flytip on their doorstep. They've left so much this time I'm going to ask the council to try and contact the landlord about it, but probably council will do as much to resolve it as they've done about illegal parking (two years and thousands owed in fines).
