Will designer jewellery tarnish?

My dd is looking at a Dior necklace for her birthday…it’s pricey, over £400 but is not made of gold. In fact, it’s not even gold plated. Described as ‘gold finish metal’ How long is this realistically going to last before tarnishing or can tarnishing be avoided if stored properly? Anyone know anything about this? T

Jeweller here - please don’t waste your money! The only thing you’re paying for is the name. If it breaks most goldsmiths will not be able to repair it well, if at all.
Put the money towards a quality piece of new or preloved jewellery. Find an independent jeweller’s, not a high street chain. They will be able to show you a variety of different pieces for your budget and advise you on its wearability and longevity. Most independents offer an aftercare service too to help you keep your jewellery in perfect condition!

Na honestly don’t waste your money. I got the Gucci stuff and it was rubbish! I bought the same stuff off hacoo for pennies and it’s lasted so much better! I would never buy the ‘designer’ jewellery again

I’ve had Saint Laurent and Chanel costume jewellery which have lasted for years. My YSL necklace has been sprayed with perfume etc. still in good condition. The after sales with Chanel was amazing. My earring lost a tiny stone and they repaired it for free. They offered to replace but it was a wedding present, so I didn’t want to. Can’t complain.

Not worth it. I work in a jewellers and will only buy and wear solid gold pieces, they will look good forever and retain their value. When I was 18 I asked for a bracelet as my big present and I chose a pretty one but unfortunately it was only gold vermeil (I didn't understand what that was at the time) and it turned a funny colour and broke quickly. I always regret asking for it, total waste of money and I could never wear it even if it was repaired, as it is a funny colour compared to my real gold jewellery. For £400+ you can buy a real 9ct gold necklace.
