If you are hypothyroid, did you have glandular fever when younger?

I had glandular fever when I was about 16, I remember that it took forever to get a clear blood test. Then when I was about 18 I had a goitre that I did nothing about, and in my 30’s I developed hypothyroidism. I’ve always wondered if it’s connected or a coincidence.
So if you’re on thyroxine, did you have glandular fever?

My mum had glandular fever when young and devolped hypothyroidism in her 40's. However my nan, her mum also had hypothyroidism. I've gone the other way and have an overactive thyroid!

Sorry is this is stupid but I assumed glandular fever came if you snogged someone with it

I'm on thyroxine and have never had glandular fever.

Saliva, so yes kissing. But also from sharing cups, food, cutlery etc.

I’ve got Hashimoto’s, and had glandular fever as a teen.

however, apparently 90% of adults test positive for the Epstein-Barr virus, and if you get it very young, it often doesn’t show symptoms. So, I wouldn’t necessarily make a connection between it and thyroid issues.

If it’s autoimmune hypothyroidism that absolutely can be triggered by a virus.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 28/09/2026 16:13

Nope. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism aged 27. I did have glandular fever aged 41 though!

BruFord · 28/09/2026 16:23

No. My symptoms began after two pregnancies. I'm not saying that pregnancy caused it, but I think the hormonal fluctuations made the condition more obvious.

I have hypothyroidism (autoimmune) and have never had glandular fever

PrincessHoneysuckle · 28/09/2026 17:12

Yes! Around 22.Didnt realise it was connected

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 28/09/2026 17:43

Yes I had it and have read that it’s connected. Lots of info from American sites cite ‘mono’ or Epstein Barr virus, which is what we in the UK call glandular fever, as a trigger. For me the birth of my first child was the more immediate trigger but when I first went to the GP to complain about my symptoms I said that it felt just like when I had glandular fever as a teen. That all encompassing exhaustion and full body aches. Ugh. Never quite felt right since then, over 25 years later.

I’ve never had GF, been on thyroxine approx 27 years.

Busybookworm · 28/09/2026 17:54

Not to my knowledge (I have autoimmune hypothyroidism). Glandular fever/epstein Barr is thought to be linked with some other autoimmune conditions though (lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis etc) so it wouldn’t be surprising.

NecklessMumster · 28/09/2026 17:57

I have hyperthyroidism but have never had glandular fever

DoAWheelie · 28/09/2026 18:01

Yes, glandular fever at 17, rapidly developed Fibromyalgia afterwards which I still have to this day. First bad thyroid result at 24, low dose thyroxine fixed it for a few years.

At 30 my TSH shot up to 64 and I'm still struggling to get it under control 6 years later despite taking 300mcg a day (last test was 12.9). My endo said I tested positive for thyroid antibodies.

I had glandular fever and have MS.
