Would you book the day off for a rare empty house ?

For the first time in at least a year - possibly longer - I have the house to myself for the day. BLISS. DH & DC will all be out, this is UNHEARD of.

I am due to work, but could book the day off. DH will be out with one of the DC -something I usually take DC to but on this VERY RARE occasion DH is covering.

Do I take the day off and enjoy having the house to myself ? I feel like I should .. but what would I do ? I don't do watching TV or laying in bed or reading or any other home hobby.

Do I take this opportunity to deep clean the house while it's empty ? which feels a bit of a sad thing to do, but I get a lot of satisfaction from a clean & tidy house - DH & DC treat the place with no respect (but that's a whole other thread).

I like baking ... but I am on a huge heath kick atm and any baking could tempt me to binge.

what would you do?

Well, it doesn't sound like you enjoy 'home' things, which is fine. So maybe take the day off but do something you do enjoy. I wouldn't take a day off work to spend it cleaning!

You do whatever makes you happy x

abracadabra1980 · 28/09/2026 09:58

I would, alone time is vital.

You've described having an empty house as bliss, so for that alone I think you should go for it.
Try not to spend the day cleaning though! If you're into baking could you do some healthier snacks that you could stick in the freezer? Wholemeal muffins or something?

I used to take a day's leave a couple of times a year when my DC were at school and DH was at work. I did some housework and read but mainly enjoyed the rare peace and quiet.

I could easily potter at home all day with Nextflix on in the background type of thing .. i just LOVE the idea of the house to myself for at least SIX hours.

I did debate inviting my sister over for a posh breakfast that I would make .. but if she got wind I was available the whole morning then she would want to do something out of the house with me and which could consume the whole morning.

I would but I wouldn't tell anyone in case they found little things you could do like picking up prescription/pop to sorting office for a parcel etc.

ooooojamaflip · 28/09/2026 10:18

@crochetandshit I won't be telling anyone ! as you say, I then risk being asked to pick up small favours for others - no thank you

Do it, but don't tell the kids!

I was home alone yesterday from 3pm until 10pm.

I switched off the TV and read my book in utter silence, bliss. And, did some crafting (I can read and knit at the same time, slowly!)

I did also clean the kitchen but it only needed a quick wipe round and I pretty much do that everyday anyway.

Don't tell anyone! I WFH twice a week and just really enjoy not having anyone else in the house. Very, very, rarely DH takes DD to see his mum and sometimes I don't have to join them. It is, as you say, bliss. I spend the lead up to it tidying like we've got visitors coming so I can spend the day pottering. Lovely. Reminds me that it's been a while - time to start encouraging DD to ask for a visit to Grandma's....

Don't tell anyone, you'll jinx it! My husband came up with all sorts of things that I wound up "not getting a chance" to do on Sunday, but it was still annoying to be asked.

My tip is to do some house-sorty things, but no more than an hour total. It's very satisfying to get them done, but say, sit and have breakfast for an.hohr with a pot of tea and a book then empty a cupboard, then more book, then ponder your way through lunch, then 15m deadheading roses etc.

Why not rent a wet vacuum and really give the carpets a good clean?

mindutopia · 28/09/2026 22:28

I wouldn’t waste my annual leave on that, no. I’d tell Dh to take the kids out on the weekend. My Dh usually takes them out at some point at the weekend. Sometimes for the whole day. Every couple months, he’ll take them both away for the weekend or sometimes longer (I stay home with the dog).
