Am in hospital. The woman across the bay is snoring her head off, the younger woman to the side has been on the phone since she was admitted at 1.30am. I’ve just told her to keep it down as people (me!) are trying to sleep. She’s told the nurses she going outside for some air and now she’s trying to make a call on speaker outside my window. Who on earth is awake at this time to talk to?

Jeez, that (using speakerphone in the middle of the night) would be highly inconsiderate at the best of times, never mind in a hospital. Snoring is annoying too, although at least not intentionally inconsiderate.

I hope she STFU very soon so you can sleep, and that you recover quickly so you can go home.

Yello24 · 28/09/2026 05:11

I have that on a fridge magnet.

Can you get someone to bring you ear plugs and a sleep mask?

DeclanPrice · 28/09/2026 05:13

She back and has bought snacks back to munch on. I’m pleased the snoring lady has managed to get a good nights rest though.

If this lady stays in, I’ll definitely be asking DH to bring in ear plugs @Yello24

😂😂😂 op you poor thing

why not just put a podcast on and close your eyes

SillyGooseyGander · 28/09/2026 05:26

That sounds awful 😖 I often think of that saying to myself too, usually around christmas time when I've got my inlaws outstaying their welcome and generally being thoroughly unlikeable.

This is the worst part of hospital imo, and has always stressed me out massively as I've laid there getting zero sleep, getting more and more worked up about it and definitely NOT being able to rest and recuperate. If it's not inconsiderate noisy patients, it's staff talking loudly and slamming doors etc. I get that they are wide awake as they're working so just treat it like a normal working environment, but do they honestly need a full volume chin wag at the nurses station, laughing away etc. It just seems so counterintuitive when patients should be recovering.

I hope you get some rest op. If you are going to be in for long, or have repeated stays (I hope not) then perhaps invest in a snoozeband. They block out light and also play whitenoise/audio tracks to block out sounds. I use one due to husband's snoring and it's probably saved my marriage.

Feel better soon 💐

I’m kicking myself because I’ve run out of audiobook hours on Spotify. She’s finally shut up now. I may get a snooze before shift change!

Last night there was a woman who came in in the middle of the night. Refused a nightie from the nurse and sat in bed in her coat all night, quietly (yay!) on her iPad. She refused food and drink all day and never took her coat off.
Nowt so queer as folk, as my gran used to say.

Definitely true in hospital but the good news is that you must not be v sick if they are bothering you - when you're truly sick you don't care.
The lovely NHS has done a good job for me this month but I knew it was time to leave b/c the staff were so noisy (cheerfully) at shift change and all through 3rd shift overnight and all the patients were driving me crazy with their snoring, phones (omg ringtones!!! put it on silent, people!) and creaking IV drivers.
Last time I was in hospital, phones were not so much a thing so people were not on them at all hours.

pelara · 28/09/2026 17:31

How easy it would be for a big sign in each ward -

The use of speakerphones, and audio without headphones is prohibited. thank you.

Just a thought 😊

This sentiment is ableist nonsense. Many of us with autism can’t rest in an environment like this no matter how sick we are.

you may have encountered someone who is allergic to the hospital nightgowns and bedding? If you haven’t had time to prepare and bring your own, keeping as much between you and soft surfaces is the best defense.

As for the food, most hospital kitchens aren’t prepared for allergies outside out of the main. Until you get that worked out, starvation it is.

You can sign up for your library online and use Libby or Borrowbox for more audiobooks for free

You poor thing. That sounds like a nightmare. I've been in (our local nhs) hospital a couple of times in recent years and am always grateful that it has en suite rooms instead of wards.

shellyleppard · 28/09/2026 18:09

Last time I was in hospital an elderly lady kept going to the loo in the night. However she left the toilet door open every time. Guess whos bed was next to the toilet??? Then she was screaming in pain. I rang the emergency buzzer and got a bollocking for it.
Couldn't leave her in pain though.

She was just barking mad.
