British wedding gift ideas to take to the USA as a plus one

I am in need of British ideas.
I am attending a wedding next month as a plus 1 in the USA near NYC. I wanted to bring a gift from the UK. I dont really know these people (as im the +1) but i know they like travel and are in medical school. They own their own home.
It needs to be something I can fit in a suitcase and not breakable.
Id like to get them something very British but apart from food im stuck for ideas.

Any ideas?

Some nice bunting.

bababamama · 27/09/2026 21:57

Teapot carefully wrapped in bubble wrap?

PassThePeaceAndQuiet · 27/09/2026 21:58

Surely you'd be a joint gift with the main invitee?

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Is this a wedding present? If so do they have a gift registry? Other than that perhaps something from fortnums or liberty if you want something obviously British. Photo frame?

Something like these from Harrods or Fortnum and Mason with some added tea.

Surely the guest you are accompanying is their friend/relative and will be sorting the gift?

If you really want to get something just from you though if you don't know them and you're not buying from a gift list then something consumable is the best option. I'd buy some English Breakfast tea and posh biscuits.

Your intention is kind but really who wants Mr & Mrs mugs, or some kind of ornament from someone they don't even know.

TwentyDunhill · 27/09/2026 22:28

British designed/ made Passport covers?

MyManinCaracas · 27/09/2026 22:28

Definitely a Fortnum and Mason box of tea, I think they do a carousel one? Add some biscuits and a tea towel.

soontobeamama · 27/09/2026 22:29

Which country in Britain are you from? That may determine possible suggestions.
For example, a quaich is a traditional wedding gift in Scotland and we have taken this abroad for several weddings and it has been very well received, but we are Scottish - if you are English or Welsh, it may not be as relevant.

Another suggestion is a woollen or tweed blanket or throw, but depends on your budget as they are likely to be very expensive.

A Welsh love spoon is a beautifully carved wooden spoon, which would transport easily and you can get them personalised, which would be a nice touch.

If you are English, maybe a pewter horseshoe?

How about some mugs - if they are gift boxed, they would travel ok, or you could keep them in your hand luggage. Harrods or Fortnum and Mason might be worth considering?

Or Emma Bridgewater Mr & Mrs mugs? They also do a Mr & Mrs gift tin that you could put in some English tea, shortbread etc?

Yetanotherone12 · 27/09/2026 22:35

you may find Betty’s hampers a bit more affordable than those suggested 🤣 They are still excellent but maybe get coffee along with the biscuits/cake as tea is less common in US

or if you’re after a token Percy pig hampers are great value and loved by our US friends.

i’d probably go with something very “British”- tea towels for example. Or a little London bus.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 27/09/2026 22:36

They dont have kettles or drink tea in US

Dogdaycommeth · 27/09/2026 22:43

Im going with an American and his idea of a gift is $200 in a card.
Id just like to get them something to say thanks as im a very last minute invite as he didnt realise the wedding was on the same week I am there so they very kindly agreed to add me on and I realise how much of a pain that is a few weeks from the wedding.

I like the idea of the British made passport covers @TwentyDunhill do you know any brands?

If not I think my back up is something tea related from Fortnum and Masons then. Maybe biscuits too.

Yes, we do. Good grief.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 28/09/2026 00:38

Don’t get passport covers unless they’ve asked for them.

As an American my advice would be to just get them something off their list.

I went to an American party last year, and like you, I did not know them vey well. On the wise advise of dd, I bought them a title - Lord and Lady something or other. 😁
It cost very little - around £35.00 little, but it was the gift let me tell you! There are plenty of sites that do them. The title comes in a scroll. You get to make up the name.

Lizzieregina · 28/09/2026 01:40

Do they have a wedding website? If so, they probably have a link to a gift registry. You could at least figure out what kind of style they like and use that to figure out a gift. It would be shipped directly to them so you won’t have to carry it.

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 28/09/2026 09:18

Emma Bridgewater do a very nice pair of mugs “mr” and “Mrs” - maybe with some fancy tea as mentioned by others.

Airconfan · 28/09/2026 14:58

I would include some Percy pigs too!

mindutopia · 28/09/2026 15:16

As an American, please don’t get them Lords and Ladies titles. 😂 It’s weird and the joke will be lost on them. Fine if close friends, but if you don’t even know them, just no. Get them something normal. A teapot, a tea hamper, nice biscuits. Americans absolutely do drink tea. It’s just tea there is watery shit, so they will appreciate the good stuff.

fuschiaproudparrot · 28/09/2026 15:21

Passport covers are useless. Everyone makes you take them off.
