Partner gives odd things away

Does anyone else’s partner do this?

Examples:

On last day of holiday, giving away what left in the sun tan cream/lotion bottles to other hotel guests, just before we leave to catch our plane;

Half used batteries for items that we no longer use, and will not be used again;

Calendars/diaries when we get to June and realise we won’t, use as we already had had enough in January that year anyway;

Packets of food and tinned drinks that we don’t like but were given to us, not to Food Banks but my carers;

Clothes that we don’t like or don’t fit, not to charity shops but to my carers;

etc.

Feel quite embarrassed about the above

I think it's sensible.
I wish mine would. I try to have a one in one out system.
DH has a three in to add to the ever growing pile of shit we don't need and will never use.
He's been in Spain since January. I am weeding out unnecessary stuff and feel much better for it

Struggling to see why this is embarrassing. Have the carers suggested it makes them uncomfortable? Giving away suncream at the end of a holiday isn’t odd

I think this is very sensible behaviour- why throw away good stuff that can be used?
I was brought up not to waste things, as were a lot of my generation, and what you describe is not unusual.

I think this is sensible as well. It saves weight in your suitcase when going home, or keeping stuff you don't need that others might benefit from.

I presume your carers are regular visitors to your house so it makes sense to offer them things he identified as not being needed. Carers are usually poorly paid, so it's nice to offer them things, they can decline if they don't want it.

I might drop perishable food to my neighbours if I am going away for a few weeks. I offer random stuff to my adult child when they visit, e.g. cookware I no longer use or towels if I have bought new ones because I am changing colour schemes for example.

I can't stand waste. More people should do this.

Im not really seeing a problem with any of that unless the people hes giving away to have expressed its making them uncomfortable?

Branleuse · 27/09/2026 22:06

I don't see the issue?

I don't really understand why he wouldn't just put the batteries in something else, but everything else sounds entirely normal?!

I've often asked my best friend if she wants some random food we bought and don't like, and she had a load of my clothes when I gained weight.

She gives me her kids clothes when they outgrow them, we give each other food we've grown when there is too much.

I don't know who would want a diary in June, but if someone does, great, better than throwing it away.

I did wonder reading your post if you feel uncomfortable because you think he's pressuring your carers to take it, rather than offering them it?

What's wrong with what he's doing?
