Board game suggestions for a family who enjoy King Domino, Carcassonne and Dixit

If we enjoy King Domino, Carcassonne, Taco cat goat cheese pizza, Uno, Ligretto and Dixit what else might we like?

Not a fan of Catan or Ticket to Ride.

We have a fair few classics (Scrabble, yahtzee, monopoly, mouse trap, cluedo). Hoping for something a bit more unusual.

Kids are 5&7 but pretty good with boardgames!

King of the Dice is a new favourite here.
At that age I find Catan and Ticket to Ride is still too ‘long term’ strategic.
With the dice element there is still a bit of luck and you do have to think strategically but only in that moment, not across multiple turns. Similar to Carcassone where you can also only make your decision based on the tile you picked.
There are two versions, a card game and a board game. We like the latter better, but both are good.

Forbidden island is good and comes in a nice tin

We like Rummikub - the whole family from to old enjoy it. Rummikub is a fast-paced, tile-based family strategy game where players arrange numbered tiles into runs and groups to clear their racks

We’ve got some really great board games since we discovered the toy shop in Ambleside and the lady who runs it is extremely knowledgeable about all kinds of games. Here’s some that I recommend:
Outfoxed
The Amazing Labyrinth
Dragonwood
Sushi Go
Blockus
Quirkle

Some of these might be a bit hard for your kids age. When mine were younger they absolutely loved Bird Bingo which is really lovely quality

Do you have a board game cafe near you? We love going to our local one on a rainy afternoon and trying out lots of games/having a proper nose at others. Some cafes are less kid friendly than others.

Older kid here who loves Ticket to Ride so might not be quite right. But we like:

Sushi Go
New York Zoo
Happy Salmon (this is a high energy one)
Labyrinth
Downfall (this is two player)

Downfall! That's a blast from my childhood and I'm 53.

Herd Mentality is great but maybe for a bigger group like if friends come round
Lots of card games
Dobble is a nice quick one
Monopoly, Game of life
Saboteur is really fun. It's a bit like Carcassonne with Among Us. You're working in a team to build a road to treasure and someone is trying to stop you.

Oo I'd forgotten about some of these! And some totally new names for me. Thanks for the recommendations.

We did used to live near a board game cafe and loved it but sadly moved away 😭

Dragonwood is a big hit in our house

Dobble or That's Not A Hat are good ones for that age. Similar category to Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Dobble is a simple matching game but quite fast paced and fun. That's Not A Hat is a memory game where you pass around cards and have to keep track of what's on them but it gets more confusing and fun each round.

If you're looking for something a bit more unusual, my family have been really into an obscure new one called Escape From Pompeii. It's got an old feel to it and pretty easy to pick up. I think it's technically an 8+ but we've played it just fine with my 6yo nephew. It's good for getting kids interested in history.

I would second Forbidden Island (I think someone else already mentioned). It's nice for a bit more strategy and it's co-operative but still has some tension. You have to collect treasures and get off an island before it floods.
