DWP and payments after death

DF died a few months ago, we were very quickly sent a bill to repay some of his state pension, fine. However, he would have been due (as it’s paid in arrears) some pension credit and also Attendance Allowance. It just occurred to me that we never did hear about these. Does that mean they just don’t pay any monies due to his estate or is it something we should chase up? I don’t know if I’m being silly here or not!

Probably worth checking the original letter to see if the other things are mentioned. Failing that, can you ring up? Good luck!

The letter only about the state pension. I can ring I just wondered if anyone knew if they actually did pay money to the estate or if it’s right that it wasn’t paid. I don’t really want to phone if I’m being stupid and they don’t pay under those circumstances.

I am sorry for your loss. I lost my husband, too, three months ago.

I would phone DWP and ask.

I am the executor for my husband's estate and recently re-payed an overpayment of two weeks' state pension from his estate.

Look at the letter you received (and the back of the letter), it may say something about pension credit and Attendance Allowance or other benefits.

On the letter I received from DWP to confirm that they had received the overpayment money, it says

"If (husband's name) was in receipt of an income-related benefit and the estate requires probate or Letters of Administration (Scotland) we will be notified by the Probate Registry or HM Commissary (Scotland) and may need to contact you again.

"If you would like more information about what happens next, please contact us. Our telephone number is at the top of this letter."

Are you the person handling your late husband's estate?

If you are the person handling your husband's affairs, if I were you I would phone the Attendance Allowance helpline and the Pension Credit helpline (have his National Insurance number to hand) and ask them to confirm whether there are arrears, how much is owed to the estate and how you should claim for the arrears.

They will be used to getting enquiries following a bereavement, so do not feel silly or uncomfortable about phoning them.
