False awakening loop with sleep paralysis

Anyone else willing to share what happened when they experienced the above. I have woken up in the middle of the night thinking what the fuck just happened.

I’ve had an episode of sleep paralysis once years ago but dear god false awakening loop just added an extra layer to this hell

Yes used to get it a lot, I would be convinced i was awake but i couldn't move, sometimes I thought I had moved and thst I was out of bed, but would then realise I was still stuck under the duvet. Frustrating and scary.what helped was forcing myself to go back to sleep properly then hopefully waking up completely.

You have my sympathy. It is horrific to experience. I read once about Bertrand Russell who experienced around 100 false awakenings in succession whilst under sedation for some op or other. Can you imagine?

I have also read that when you are experiencing sleep paralysis it can help to concentrate on moving just one finger or your toes, if you can. This might be enough to wake you properly.

I hope it all passes quickly for you.

Oh gosh i experienced feeling paralysed and not being able to move and absolute panic on one occasion . It was absolutely terrifying. This was years ago. I had no idea this was " a thing". I thought it was just me. Absolutely horribly upsetting and the memory has stayed with me. I actually thought I had had a stroke.

I used to dream I was awake a lot more when I was younger. If you check you are awake in the daytime, when you know you are awake, you'll gradually be able to do this when you are asleep, and wake yourself up or control the dream.

Hi OP. I used to get sleep paralysis a lot as a young person and now occasionally as an adult I dream about it, or have other false awakening dreams. If I'm under a lot of stress it happens more and usually at the end of a bad dreams. Lack of sleep also makes it worse for me, or going to bed too late.

Thanks all. I’m glad I’m not the only one. It was literally off the back of me believing I had woken my husband up to tell him i think someone is in our toddler sons room and I physically saw him go and check there was no one there. Next thing I know I’m in some loop but couldn’t move or scream and kept seeing someone in our room and then they were on top of me strangling me. I eventually did wake up and woke my DH and all was fine. When I’ve woken up this morning I said i’m sorry for making him get out of bed and check on DC and he told me that bit didn’t even happen either.

I get sleep paralysis. Yoga breathing and trying to move your small finger first works for me. Yoga breathing and recognising its sleep paralysis is usually enough to nod off. But I agree it’s not pleasant.

There was a study on it years ago - I filled in some questionnaire but never heard the outcome.

I used to get this many, many years ago. My DH worked permanent nights and I've no idea what set it off, maybe I was stressed. I would semi wake, but not be fully conscious. I couldn't move a muscle and was convinced someone was in my bedroom and was going to attack me. I can still remember what felt at the time like an incredible struggle to move a limb or make a noise. DH had to switch to day work because it happened a few times and was terrifying. He did eventually switch back to nights but it never happened again.

Sleeping on my side helped me rather then my back
