To Ask About Protocol?

I understand that if you were to meet Prince George or Princess Charlotte or Prince Louis in public or at a private event, according to tradition, you’d have to bow/curtsey to them and address them as Your Royal Highness and then Sir/Ma’am.

But, how deep would you personally decide to bow/curtsey to them? Close to the floor or just bobbing your head?

Also, would you just call them Sir and Ma’am or include HRH?

I wouldn’t curtsey to anyone.

ShakyBake · 25/09/2026 21:28

When I was a gardener for Charles (or big ears as I used to call him) I used to bow so low my head would touch my kneecaps.

GladysHeeler · 25/09/2026 21:31

You don’t have to. It’s up to the individual.

How deep…is also a personal choice.

@DasEnglischesWetter another question about royalty?

No one is required to do anything when meeting the royal family. Their protocol is easily found by a quick internet search, but it is not a requirement and no one need follow it.

If I met them I would say hello and call them by their names, as I would do with any other child that I met. I don't bow or curtsey to anyone.

But, I think you are not serious in these questions. How could anyone think that people would bow to the floor to children?? Really! Not sure what your motivation is for these posts.

Is that you Megan? 😂

MellowSubmarine · 25/09/2026 21:37

You’re wrong on the protocol anyway. Even when meeting royals “officially” at an event, bowing/curtseying is optional, as per the royals themselves.

Why are you so obsessed about British etiquette? Are you writing a piece for a German magazine/newspaper?

Who actually would choose to do this? Nor would I be calling anyone Sir or Ma’m or HRH either!

The Royal family are a fucked up family, who are there because of an accident of birth. if anyone should be bowing or scraping it should be them to the UK tax payer!

The people, who actually work for a living and have no- opt out and are forced to support them financially via the sovereign grant, so they can continue to live their lives on luxury.

No-one's asking you to. Bowing and curtseying isn't required.

The people, who actually work for a living and have no- opt out and are forced to support them financially via the sovereign grant....

The Sovereign Grant is a percentage of the income from the Crown Estate - that is property that originally belonged to the Crown. The rest of the income from the Crown Estate is passed to the Treasury, so far from being 'forced to support them financially', 'the people' are actually benefiting.

A couple of minutes Googling and you could have saved yourself all that ranting, and saved on the exclamation marks too.

Well I wouldn't bow or curtsey. I would be the same level of polite and respectful I am with anybody I meet for the first time.

Da dein Benutzername deutsch ist – keine große Kunst!

And as others say, it’s optional. I have met several members of the Royal Family in previous roles. I never curtsied nor called anyone RH. A simple ‘Good morning/afternoon’ was always perfectly sufficient.

TomsOnToast · 28/09/2026 16:57

I met the Queen and Prince Philip and just shook their hands. I wouldn't have curtsied as I don't think they deserve more respect than anyone else.
