im 36 gay male and single and moving back in with my parents, i bought my first home 2 years ago at 34, i want to start a 3 year degree apprenticeship where my pay will reduce a little bit and i wont be able to do as much overtime, im just about able to pay for everything and put a little back for savings, and I mean with the cost of living I’m literally keeping my head above the water and I have had a few big pay outs with house issues although my parents have always reassured me that if I need to borrow money I can I have always just managed and havnt had to borrow anything, im panicking in case my car breaks, I have two dogs that are now senior so could be costly in the next few years, my amazing parents have said sell the house and move back in which I’m always around here anyway sometimes staying the night, me and my parents have a very good relationship, and to start and finish the degree apprenticeship at the hospital and keep saving and then start over and buy a new house when im ready, i dont want to let the house out, i actually really dislike the house as I feel I rushed into buying something with a small deposit, in an area I don’t like, buying because I could afford something, I’ve been so unhappy there and feel this is a sensible option for me to take however I can’t help in thinking im taking a step back, part of me feels abit ashamed and embarrassed, I’m 36 still single life isn’t going as I thought it would, anyone been in a similar style position?

You've overstretched youself. Don't feel bad. Go back to mum and dad's for a bit. You are not a failure. Everything is going to be alright.

They love you and you love them. What's a house or flat anyway? It's just a machine for living in.

I moved back in with my parents at 36.

I’d been living (renting) and working in London, then returned to my hometown with partner. We bought a house and lived there for around five years before the relationship disintegrated. I didn’t ever consider buying him out as I didn’t want the house: too many bad memories and I wasn’t keen on the area. I moved in with my parents whilst he set about trying to buy me out… This took nearly a year. I ended up staying with my parents for around 18 months. It wasn’t ideal, but I’m grateful that they were there for me and it was the best thing I could’ve done.

I don’t see it is taking a step back: it was a blip, and my family were there for me as yours are for you. You bought property - it’s not like you’ve always been at home - And you decided it’s not for you. Many people do. Use the opportunity you’ve been given to reassess what you want and put plans in place to get it.

Oh don't be embarrassed, you tried and it didn't work, it really doesn't matter. You and your parents sound lovely and it reads like you have a brilliant relationship.

Loads of people stay at home, and why not really. I may be wrong but I do think this having to move out and struggle by a certain age is a British thing - multi generational living is standard in loads of countries.

You can’t rent it out to cover mortgage ?
