Had planned on a paella but really fancying some fish and chips.
Was Fish Friday ever a thing when you were growing up, maybe at school or at home?
It wasn't really for me, but it definitely still is a theme at DCs schools.

Yes I was raised to have fish on Fridays and still do to be honest.
Are you leaving out the chorizo in your paella 🥘 or subbing it?
Fish & chips is always a great idea imho.

Jonesmaximus · 25/09/2026 15:26

I think there is something Biblical about fish on a Friday? Or is it just no meat? I had a catholic friend who does fish only on Fridays and she said it's biblical, or at least within her denomination.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 25/09/2026 15:27

Why not make a paella and add battered fish from the chippy into it?

sherbetlemonade · 25/09/2026 15:31

We're having salmon with lime & coriander rice, and whatever vegetable DH deems to be the right thing to have with salmon and rice (I already vetoed the cauliflower in the fridge). He's going shopping on the way home from work.

minipie · 25/09/2026 15:48

Nope we had fish last night, sea bass with garlicky herby butter beans. And Tuesday actually- pea and prawn risotto.

If you have a good, easy paella recipe please share!

PauliesWalnuts · 25/09/2026 15:53

Fish pie tonight. I work a four day week and go to the fish stall at my local market - I used to work in a fishmongers as a student so I use it as practice to keep my filleting skilz on point :-)

Girasoli · 25/09/2026 16:17

The DCs school always has fish on Fridays.
I'm not organised enough to do it year round but during lent we try to do veggie or fish om Fridays (Catholic).

FeliciaFancybottom · 25/09/2026 16:18

Nope. We never eat fish, and I wouldn't eat it as a child either.

pokewomans · 25/09/2026 16:25

DC still have fish & chips for school diner on Friday

MummyOre · 25/09/2026 16:26

No, we never eat fish!

Smallpoxy · 25/09/2026 16:29

No. We rarely eat fish.

The tradition of "Fish Friday" originates from Christian religious history where Friday was designated as a weekly day of fasting to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus.
Believers were expected to abstain from eating the meat of warm-blooded land animals, which was considered a luxury associated with feasting. Since fish was viewed as a humble and accessible food source at the time it became the standard alternative.

LovelyHotDonutsNiceNFresh · 25/09/2026 16:30

DH doesn't eat meat on Fridays so yes, it's either salmon or eggs depending on which kids are around for dinner.

FridgeJenga · 25/09/2026 16:32

@minipie sorry no recipe, DH just kind of throws everything together, and it's different every time! 😅

@didntlikeanyofthesuggestions now that's a plan!

To be fair, the paella is fairly chock full of fish and seafood, there's always monkfish and big prawns and calamari, they are the staples, then whatever else he has bought or fancies will be added.
@DoubleShotEspresso yes, there will be chorizo as DH always cooks that first so all the oil will flavour the rice.

As much as possible I do but my bloody freezer has gone crazy and I've had to defrost it and lost my fish! Have had salmon already this week.
Am contemplating the local pub as I am pissed off. Would probably have scampi!

DoubleShotEspresso · 25/09/2026 16:46

Sounds lovely!

CakeyBakes · 25/09/2026 16:47

Nope, never eaten fish and neither have my children.

Sunbringer · 25/09/2026 16:48

No it wasn’t but we do like a fish Friday as a couple. However tonight it’s Mexican bean soup Friday.

reluctantbrit · 25/09/2026 16:49

I grew up Catholic but we never observed it. We had fish, panfried with potatoes or chips but not on a regular basis.

DD hates fish so it's not a food I cook on a regular basis. DH and I actually love it but I prefer cooking a whole trout or gurnard and DD can't even look at a fish where the head is still attached so we did it when she was on a Scout trip or sleepover at a friend.

Funnywonder · 25/09/2026 16:55

We always had fish on a Friday when I was growing up. My mum was a lapsed Catholic and carried on with what she was used to. DP’s Catholic dad sticks with the meat free aspect, but he doesn’t eat fish, so he’s a vegetarian for the day. He would never admit that though🤣 We eat a lot of fish in our house. Friday or any other day is fine by me. Love it!

RoachFish · 25/09/2026 16:57

For once yes! I'm Swedish though and taco Friday is a thing here, so tonight it's fish tacos.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/09/2026 16:59

I grew up in a Catholic household so fish on Friday is ingrained!

Puhpuhpuhpuh · 25/09/2026 17:03

Yes, generally, but not fish from the fish and chip shop if that’s what you mean.

RaraRachael · 25/09/2026 17:49

It was never a thing in our house growing up.
OH was brought up in a Catholic family and they always had fish on Fridays - no idea why.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 25/09/2026 17:53

It is Fish Friday in my house, so it will be fish pie tonight. Fish Fridays are significantly better (and more varied) than the fish that used to practically be doing breaststroke through a vat of oil at my Catholic sixth form!

The chip shops used to be heaving on Fridays, presumably at least in part to this tradition, but it is an eye-watering price to feed your family from fish and chip shops these days.

Toastandjam16 · 25/09/2026 17:56

Yes, grew up with fish and chips from the chippy every Friday! Don't stick to it every week but we eat lots of fish in our house. Your paella sounds lovely and super fishy!
