How on earth to get nursery stains out?

Totally fed up. Very little time to do washes and I every time I do half the stuff comes out still stained. My toddler comes back from nursery everyday in spare clothes with one or sometimes even two sets of clothes bagged up, wet and stained. Glad toddler is having fun but GOD HELP ME I have no non-stained clothes left. Tried soaking in vanish but can only do that on a couple of items at a time, doesn’t always work.

please tell me someone out there has the answer?!

Dark coloured clothes and just wash the clothes and use them don’t worry about the stains

concertinacornflake · 25/09/2026 09:24

Send him to nursery in already stained clothes. Kids don't stay clean, it's a waste of energy fighting reality.

A prewash soak can help a bit.

BalakayAARon · 25/09/2026 09:25

Just send them in the clean, but stained clothes for nursery.

Some nurseries provide a uniform and this is the exact reason the uniform is for. Stained clothing doesn’t matter for nursery honestly.

We just send ours in second hand Vinted clothes that we don’t care about and accept they’ll get stained in the course of events. Maybe that’s an option?

Washing machine also does a pretty good job getting most stains out.

mindutopia · 25/09/2026 09:29

Vanish gel, not the soak, that doesn’t seem to work as well. And just only send in things you don’t care about getting stained. We had a lot of dark clothes for nursery.

SatinHeart · 25/09/2026 09:29

Agree with pp, have specific 'nursery clothes' and don't worry about the stains. I used to buy ebay bundles for DC1 (DC2 went to a different nursery that had a uniform).

Then keep a few non-stained sets of clothes aside for weekends etc.

Rosieliz04 · 25/09/2026 09:30

The answer is to not worry, if you can!
Just accept the inevitable.

I have two groups of clothes, one for nursery and the other for all other days. I actively don’t care about or actually dislike the nursery clothes so they can get as stained as they like!

I honestly wouldn’t spend time or energy worrying about stains from nursery. It’s par for the course.

I pour ace stain remover directly onto the stain the stain and then stick in the washing machine. I find it works better than vanish

Wednesdaysotherchild · 25/09/2026 09:45

I just treat the stain before washing with liquid laundry detergent or washing up liquid. (Ecover) Working so far!

Honeypizza · 25/09/2026 10:14

Get a selection of dark coloured tops, jumpers and joggers and those are the nursery clothes. Some stains also come out (or at least fade) after a few hours in a sunny window, so give that a try.

MidnightPatrol · 25/09/2026 10:23

I have a nursery wardrobe and a weekend wardrobe, and just accept it

Floppyearedlab · 25/09/2026 10:27

You cannot be precious about a child looking neat and pretty coming to nursery. Send them in clothes you don’t mind them looking a state in. As long as she is clean, she is fine.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 25/09/2026 10:35

I used to work in a nursery and we would always tell the parents to dress them in 'play clothes' that you don't mind getting wet/stained/dirty etc...

Most of the parents had 'nursery clothes' that they would put them in to send them to nursery and the kids would often turn up in clothes that were stained but clean.

Nursery is about having fun, learning, messy play, outdoor play and not for worrying about getting clothes stained or ruined.

Don't worry about it. Have the same few outfits that are just for nursery and then wash them and use them again. No-one cares about the stains but you.

Theonewhogotthecake · 25/09/2026 10:42

I wouldn’t fight it! Give up and send them in clean stained clothes.

We had a drawer for nursery clothes and one for other clothes.

TheCosyRain · 25/09/2026 10:45

Best stain removing tip that has ever worked for me - leave clothes to dry in direct sunlight and it will often lift stains out. But also agree with everyone else that for nursery clothes it really doesn’t matter at all!

m00ngirl · 25/09/2026 10:59

Ok thanks everyone, much appreciated. I do already have “nursery clothes” and weekend clothes but I’ve not yet come to terms with sending toddler out in stained clothes. I at least feel reassured that, having asked how to clean them, the consensus is “it can’t be done”. This will be the beginning of my acceptance stage.

I will try the Ace though! Thanks for the tip. I used to use that. I’ve been ploughing through vanish powder and gel but often just not cutting it.
