Have the opticians scammed me ?

I’ve been given some “concentration glasses” as I get eye strain and headaches a lot. They just seem like I’m looking through actual glass though, like fake glasses 😆 this is my prescription, can anybody explain it to me ?
thanks

Have the opticians scammed me ?

I can't explain it so I'm hoping someone else does. It looks like there's very little that needs correcting though. Have any of your friends tried your glases? Can they notice if they change anything? I hope you didn't pay a lot for the glasses!

GoldTie · 25/09/2026 08:25

It’s a really weak prescription, but give them a go and see if they help your headaches. I think my first glasses were +1 and I had raging headaches at that point.

Nannyfannybanny · 25/09/2026 08:26

I'm not an optician, just telling you from DH and I prescriptions. The+ for the right eye, means you are long sighted in that eye,you can't see close up. That's DH. I am shortsighted, the - left eye,you have short sight in that one.O.25 is a very small correction.

CanTheWorldSlowDownPlease · 25/09/2026 08:27

It's a weak prescription but if you are getting headaches then it will make a difference. Why didn't you ask the optician to explain it? Why did you just assume you are being scammed rather than have a conversation?

Bloau · 25/09/2026 08:28

I had a prescription of, I'm pretty certain, -0.5 in one eye at some point and was told they didn't do contact lenses at that strength so if I wanted them I'd just get one lens to put in my worse eye. Now my prescription is about -1.5 in one eye +0.5 in the other, my glasses feel like basically glass to me - I'm not going to bother getting any more in future and don't wear them as they make no difference now the prescription is so low. Your prescription looks very low if I'm reading it right - I can't imagine glasses making a noticeable difference but perhaps it could help with headaches.

tomblybooo · 25/09/2026 08:29

So the optician said something like my left eye lens isn’t working properly so the right eye is making up for it which is what’s causing the headaches ? When I watched tv at night I find myself having to really open my eyes and they feel like they’re squinting, is that makes sense? And when I put the glasses on it does get better.
The reason I’m asking is because my dh tried them on and said they must be plain glass lol

Because I guess I trusted a professional. Then I saw a few posts online with people saying everytime they go to the opticians their prescription has changed and it makes them wonder if it’s just about money

As others have said it is a weak prescription but hopefully it will help with the headaches.

i went to get my eyes tested as I was suffering with headaches and my first prescription was 0.50 and it really helped settle the headaches.

BabblingBiddy · 25/09/2026 08:31

Its just a very weak prescription. DS has a similar one. They make no difference at all to me (im -3.75) as its such a small correction. But they make the world of difference to him.

tomblybooo · 25/09/2026 08:32

They do settle my headaches and help when I’m squinting at the tv, but I also thought I wonder if it’s placebo effect

Balloonhearts · 25/09/2026 08:33

Have they tried patching the good eye for a day or two? I did it and my weaker eye improved enough that I needed new glasses the next time I went for my eye test.

Journey1234 · 25/09/2026 08:35

You have slight astigmatism in one eye it just means the shape is more rugby ball than round. It’s so very slight,it may help a little with the tv. They have to present you with the prescription and tell you that it may help with glasses then you decide.

TickedOffAndALittleFedUp · 25/09/2026 08:35

It's just balancing your eyes so they work together and tbh if they help the headaches then they're doing exactly what they were prescribed for.

CanTheWorldSlowDownPlease · 25/09/2026 08:37

Prescriptions do change every time, especially if you have an astigmatism because the eye ball is fluid and moves. If you trusted the professional, why would you then believe randoms on the internet? If they work, then they work!

Elieza · 25/09/2026 08:41

as long as they work ignore dh. they are a prescription so dh is wrong.

and even if it was a placebo, which it is not, they are helping so yeayh.

MrsBatshitRatshit · 25/09/2026 08:50

Keep the glasses, change the husband.

This is spot on. And most importantly they’re helping.

Branleuse · 25/09/2026 08:58

À small prescription can and often does make a big difference as you have found.
Your husband says it's like looking through glass but I'm sure if he wore them for a while, he would maybe get a headache from eyestrain, but even if he didn't, that doesn't mean they aren't helping you.

I think it's a bit odd that your husband isn't just saying that it's good that it is helping, and is trying to say that it's placebo or you've been scammed, when it actually appears to be helping, just as the professional optician said.

Is he always such a hater/negative/prick?

Zuve · 25/09/2026 09:05

So you strain your eyes after a while. We use +1.25 ready readers. They sort out the reading strain and are all around the house. No problems

bunnypenny · 25/09/2026 09:13

I really don’t understand why you have jumped to the idea of a professional scamming you when they’ve provided glasses that suit your prescription and are helping you.

I mean, opticians do upsell but also prescriptions do change. And depending on the day you might also 'see' differently. I have gone to the opticians and they gave me a new prescription and I declined buying new glasses. I did not feel good about my own answers to the test.

I’ve just been to the optician. She said that my prescription has changed a little, but if I’m not having any problems, I don’t need new glasses this time. And this isn’t a pricey independent, it’s a bog standard high street chain.

TheInternetIsNotAnalogue · 25/09/2026 09:40

No definitely not scammed!
You are long sighted in one eye and short sighted in the other. I have the exact same issue, but my short sighted eye is a much stronger prescription (I am like a Cyclops).
The headaches I got were caused by one eye doing all the heavy lifting. And in our case, that keeps switching depending upon whether you are reading (relying more on your short sighted eye), or watching TV/driving (relying more on the other eye). I only noticed the issue when I realised I was closing one eye to read my phone 🤦

Releasemeplease · 25/09/2026 09:42

If the glasses are actually helping you then I don't see why you are assuming the opticians are scamming you.

Nannyfannybanny · 25/09/2026 09:53

i went to a brilliant local little optician. They closed, did one of the big high street ones, had issues with 3 deferent branches. I am mildly short-sighted, the second branch put contact lenses in, I couldn't see the figures on the dashboard of the car,my glasses were for distance.. The all tried the upsell. I'm night blind, bought specially coated lenses, yellow lenses, anti glare, all were a waste of money. I have been going to an optician in a supermarket for almost 15 years, now free because I'm over 60 and it's been 2 yearly. script changes and the lovely chap said I don't need new glasses. interestingly, when I paid, I was told I had to go every year.
