Long run of therapy coming to an end and I would like to get a small gift and thankyou card

Is that allowed?

Usually gifts which can’t be shared arent allowed (so chocs or biscuits for an office could be ok) but some places I’ve worked (albeit private/charity sector) are usually ok with a personal gift of very low value. It really depends. Hopefully someone who works for the NHS will be able to confirm.

Oh I meant to say as well - a card would be fine.

I sent a thank you card last week when I was professionally and kindly treated by a clinician I won't see again. I think that such things can be used towards performance management evaluations etc. And even if they can't I wanted to acknowledge that she made something I'd dreaded much easier.

A card is lovely and totally appropriate. Gifts better avoided (some workplaces even make u declare them which is a faff!) but if u really want to then should be under £5 value (this needs updates! Hard to get a box of celebrations for less than that now!) and ideally something shareable in the office.

I was given flowers recently which was lovely.

Chocolates and biscuits always go down well in our team.
Cards with personal messages are the best though!

I was thinking of an item around £20, I just googled and it says under £50 in our trust are allowed so will get the thing I planned.

Hospital doctor in family says for training competencies they ask for written notes from any patients but not many people nowadays actually write a card or note so that would be a valuable thing to give and aside from that meaningful and encouraging to the person who has helped you OP. A lovely thing to do. They all hear enough complaining people so lovely to be positive.

It’s fine

NHS AHP here. A small gift is lovely - I've had a few bits and pieces over the years, including some escargot in garlic butter. Cards with some meaningful words are always the most appreciated.

I was told I couldn't give a doctor, who was doing a home visit to our family (yes, this was NHS!) a cup of tea because it could be seen as a gift/bribe. OK, maybe he just didn't want one, but I guess he was telling the truth because he could just have said no thanks, but he talked at length about how they're not allowed to accept anything. That was a few years ago, so happy to be corrected by current NHS staff if it's changed.

A small gift and a card is fine. I believe if the gift is over £10 the therapist is supposed to 'declare it' so no-one can claim it was a payment or bribe at a later date!

It's a nice gesture of you OP.

Note in a card & flowers is ideal!

Doradormouse · 26/09/2026 02:32

IMO you need to check the rules for your particular Trust before you give anything.

Morecoffeeneedef · 26/09/2026 07:43

An appreciative card is always appreciated . A gift may not be something she wants so it's a bit risky.

ConsideringBaby2 · 26/09/2026 07:57

I’ve loved cards from my clients (therapy) as I can appreciate the words and also add to my yearly review.
I have had several gifts over the years and in our trust everything must be declared.
