What’s your thoughts on this for 9/11?

For decades, the United States turned to look the other way as many of their Irish-American and other citizens eagerly funded IRA terrorists during the Troubles to attack and kill British (and Irish) soldiers and civilians.

They notoriously held fundraisers to fund for the IRA and have constantly meddled in the affairs of Northern Ireland.

Then, when 9/11 happened and they got a taste of terrorism courtesy of Islamic Jihadists suddenly that was unacceptable.

One, Irish-American Republican Congressman named Peter King famously said that “The IRA never attacked the USA and my loyalty is to the USA” when questioned about his hypocrisy in being so vigilant against Al-Qaeda after 9/11 yet having long praised and supported the IRA.

Not that I necessarily believe this, but what do you think of those on social media and elsewhere who say 9/11 was cathartic as the USA got a taste of their own medicine after what they did to Britain? Especially when considering how NYC has long been a hotbed for IRA support and how so many Irish-American firefighters and civilians died?

Of course, 9/11 had nothing to do with Britain or Ireland, but just an analogy that many of them eagerly funded terrorism against Britain and only took it seriously when it impacted them.

On the one hand it's dreadful to celebrate the killing of non-combatents anywhere by anyone. And 9/11 killed a lot of innocents.

On the other hand the US has long caused horrific damage everywhere from Guatemala through Angola to Laos and were very happy for the pain, suffering and death to be visited on others. They still are in the Middle East. And hauling people off to torture prisons in El Salvador. The IRA connection isn't even the worst of it.

I just wish they'd mind theor own business!

I don't think anyone deserved what happened. I do think some people have shirt memories when it came to terror attacks by the IRA and how scared everyone was all the time. They acted like we in the UK have never been under that kind of threat.

I think many Irish-Americans had a very naive view of the NI situation. Irish people were mostly horrified that they were supporting the IRA, but Americans didn’t seem to understand that,

Another issue is that organisations like Noraid were set up to raise funds to aid the families of imprisoned, injured, or dead IRA members. Though they were accused of channeling funds and procuring weapons for the Provisional IRA they denied that. So perhaps some Americans thought they were simply providing humanitarian aid?

What’s an Irish-American? I ask as an American with British citizenship.
