Pokémon Trading Cards

Motherofmonsters · 24/09/2026 17:27

Hello,
My 6 year old has asked for Pokémon Cards for her birthday. Where are the best places to buy them/what packs are the best to buy as a starter.

I haven't looked at Pokémon cards since the original 151 so I'm a bit lost.

Seems to be so many different pack types.

Thank you for your help

You get tins of cards. Gives a handy storage space too

MyCatIsAnAeroplane · 24/09/2026 18:18

Just buy anything to start! If she’s only 6 or hen whatever you can get your hands on. The fun then will be opening the packets. Get a cute binder and some card sleeves too and start collecting!

CrazyCatLady2026 · 24/09/2026 18:21

Good luck getting your hands on them. Mine collects them and all the resellers literally buy them soon as they hit the shops you can't find them anywhere other than the Japanese and Korean cards.

My son (also 6) collects them. Smyths usually have a reasonable stock if there's one near you, or shops that sell board games/tabletop games. We've used Travelling Man and Zatu in the past. We bought a pokemon folder to display them all in, which also avoids them ending up scattered all over the bedroom.

Where are you roughly? I know of a good shop in Brighton….they are resellers but also sell new stuff and very helpful.

Do they happen to have a website? Sincerely a desperate mum after English Pokemon cards for her ten year old 🤣

Honestly good luck! As ridiculous as this sounds dp collects them and he queued from 5am last week for the latest drop. It’s completely insane. My ds wants some for Christmas so I’ve admitted defeat and will queue from 5:30am when the next lot come out. Scalpers buy as many as they can and then sell them for quadruple the price.

ebay is great, you can get bundles for a few pounds

shellyleppard · 26/09/2026 14:53

@CrazyCatLady2026 there is a company online called magic madhouse..... I've brought loads of Pokémon cards and sets from them over the past few years.
Good luck!

Iloveeverycat · 26/09/2026 15:08

If she doesn't mind what she gets as she is 6 just go on ebay and buy some older bundles. There are a lot on there It not worth buying the new ones.

WillyieBanjo · 26/09/2026 15:40

I feel I’ve posted to many pro Costco recommendations recently but we bought a set with a limited addition tin from there and is went down very well in this house.

beware of counterfeits though

wendy1288 · 26/09/2026 18:15

If he's just starting out I would go on vinted or ebay. You can buy bundles for a few pound. In the shops a pack is like £7 and you only get a few.

caringcarer · 26/09/2026 21:52

Some things ever go out of fashion. My DS who has just turned 40 used to collect them. He still likes them when my dgs collects them (his nephew). I've noticed ds get really excited when dgs gets new ones. Get your 6 year old a bundle from eBay to start with. Once they learn the names of them add another bundle.

Amazon is one of the best places to get them from funnily enough, you do need to request an invite to the products but they get a lot of stock and I get invites fairly regularly.

you will find all shops only have stock on release dates though, much of it preordered. You might find a few loose packs here or there in the supermarkets but it’s random if they’ve had a delivery or not. It also depends which set, some of the recent ones (pitch black) aren’t as in demand as the rarer cards aren’t as desirable, but the current 30th anniversary set is going to be a nightmare to get anywhere.

realistically if you don’t know what you’re doing and need them for a set date, eBay is your best bet, just be prepared to pay 2-3x the retail price (e.g a 30th celebration trainer box with nine packs to open and some sleeves, dice, coin, art card will run you £100-120 when they sell for £50 in stores). Or buy a few cute cards from eBay, some nice ones only cost £1-2 each and you can always make her a fake pack with those.

if she wants to play the game you can get the trainer academy set p easily but has no packs to open or rare cards, just what’s needed to play the card game. I’m assuming she wants them because she has seen other people opening packs though.

Unicornsandprincesses · 26/09/2026 22:28

We got loads from Facebook marketplace, put them in a binder with her favourite pokemon on the front. My 5yo (at the time) hasn’t really got a clue about the game, what any of the cards mean so she was happy to get anything and flick through the pages.

She is only 6 she doesn't need any of the new ones. There are loads of people selling bundles of the older ones so really cheap

pinkdyno · 27/09/2026 12:41

My kids at same stage and I have got tins and fifty cards each from a very helpful seller on vinted. £6 a set.

depend why she wants them, if it’s cos she’s been watching some YouTuber opening them then having some rubbish ones already opened won’t be what she wants, if she just wants cards then it will work.

i was about six when the original ones came out and going to buy a pack to open was the highlight of my week, and was super exciting to get the shiny ones.
