How painful is a mammogram?

I have an appointment for my first mammogram and am a bit worried about how painful it will be. I have really small boobs! Due to go out for a special occasion afterwards and wondering if I need to change the date if it’s likely to be really sore afterwards?

It’s a weird pressure but not painful. In my experience I felt totally normal afterwards. Went to work! It’s worth having painkillers beforehand but you won’t need more than one.

It’s not painful.

It is uncomfortable trying to twist yourself into the required positions.

Not painful. Slight discomfort as not an everyday thing to squash a boob flat between two glass plates!

Uncomfortable but not painful

This has been my experience, I’ve had two, and wasn’t expecting pain, just squeezing and discomfort, but I was actually crying when I left the first one and had to avoid the waiting area in case I freaked out the other women. I left saying I wouldn’t do it again. But yesterday, I made myself. I’d been contemplating taking a diazepam in advance but didn’t. And it was completely fine. Different radiographer, gentler, and very good at narrating ‘Little bit more of a squeeze now— you’re nearly there’, and it was uncomfortable, but absolutely bearable, and brief, and I left feeling fine.

So I conclude that the same equipment and procedures on the same breasts, on a woman with the same pain threshold, can still feel very different on different occasions. The more attuned radiographer made a real difference.

I’m quite large breasted, which may make a difference, though.

I’ve never found them painful or even uncomfortable, just a bit awkward to get into position. I’m small of nork so not sure if that helps. You could practice beforehand by trying to put your boob in a photocopier.

I found it about the same as having blood pressure measured.

I'm small chested and find them uncomfortable but the nurse has always been really good at positioning me and reassuring me. By the time I've got my top back on after, the pain has disappeared. Uncomfortable but important to have done.

I have really small boobs (32A). Not painful. Just a bit of momentary discomfort. definitely doesn't last beyond the appointment.

Just had one it’s uncomfortable for a few seconds that’s it.

Most of the time they are just a bit uncomfortable. I have had one that resulted in some bruising but she was very new and hadn't much of a clue what she was doing. My most recent one was an absolute doddle.

I found the opposite! I'm normally very matter of fact about anything medical - smear tests don't bother me at all. Had my first mammogram last year and was surprised that it hurt and I felt tender/bruised on one side after for a while. (Medium/largish boobs - maybe they have to squash them a bit more?)

Don't want to scare you - it definitely wouldn't put me off having another - it's absolutely worth it. But I'd only ever heard people say it's a bit uncomfortable like on this thread and wish I'd been more mentally prepared.

I was glad to just be going home after but I would have been fine to go out - probably would have been a nice distraction

I think they used to squash the boobs much more than they do now. I remember many years ago and they absolutely flattened them (so much I had a discharge from my nipple). That squashing went on for a few years IME. In the last 10 years I've never been squashed. Not painful, not even uncomfortable so I think the training might have changed.

Didn't feel anything but I was worried beforehand.

I've had two and lost weight from my boobs between them - the one when my boobs were larger (E cup) was more uncomfortable - not painful, but I could feel the plates on my side-boob skin when the plates were angled, whereas the one where my boobs were smaller (C Cup) I didn't feel any discomfort at all, I think the mammographer found it easier to position them.

I also have praise for the efficiency of the NHS over 50s screening service - seen on time, in and out very quickly, staff friendly and professional. It was a freezing winter day and a little mobile unit but lovely and warm inside.

ETA that I got the results by post within 10 days (all clear, thankfully).

Small boobs here too and I had my first mammogram earlier this month. It was fine, just uncomfortable mainly although I did wince a bit with one of the side on X-rays but it is over in seconds.

Weird but not painful for me. And, last time, the machine was glitching so she kept squishing my boob in the vice thing but it wouldn’t take the picture! It took about 15 attempts, but that is not usual and, even with 15 goes, it wasn’t painful. If anything, I would describe it as….chilly!
For me, it is NOWHERE NEAR as uncomfortable as a smear.

Not as painful or traumatic as breast cancer treatment

I’m a c cup and I’ve only had one so far. I found it quite uncomfortable. I had a sharp pain going into my back until the next day which Dr Google tells me may have been a pinched nerve from positioning. It was unpleasant wouldn’t have stopped me going out if I had plans.

Uncomfortable, as others have said. I would say less uncomfortable than a smear. Certainly worth the discomfort for the benefits in both cases. It’s important that we look after our bodies.

I had my first one earlier this year. Nowhere near as uncomfortable as I thought it'd be and I have a lot of breast to squish! It was a trainee doing mine (with an experienced person) and I actually found that whole thing fascinating.

I also had the same name as the trainee which caused some comedy moments!

I had one done straight after a biopsy and even that didn’t hurt, agree with posters to avoid before period if still menstruating and get breast tenderness. For me it was more that the whole process just seems ridiculously inefficient, I can’t believe in 2026 this is the best way to image breasts.

And I’ve already made the decision if they ever give me a male staff member I will refuse, I’ve heard this is unlikely. It’s just all a bit undignified. But I didn’t find it painful.

My first one was a general radiographer it was sore. My second was the specialist radiographer on the travelling truck she was brilliant it was uncomfortable, but not sore.

I've had around five or six of them and I have big boobs. It's painful for just a few seconds when actually take the x-ray but the whole procedure is only minutes.

My mum had breast cancer at 80 so I make sure that I attend. Due to age, I now have to request the appointment rather than they contact me.

I had a much better experience on the mobile unit this year too, but as last year I was done at the breast check clinic, presumably the radiographer there was also a specialist?
