Reception child having toileting accidents at wraparound care, is this normal?

My son has started reception and has been having toileting accidents on the long days he is at wrap around care.

School seem breezy about it but I am becoming more and more mortified everytime a bag of wet clothes is bought out at pickup time.

I think he isn’t a fan of the toilet setup, there’s hand dryers which he finds loud and other older children at wrap around care. I’ve spoken to his teacher and the wrap around care manager and they are doing what they can but nothing seems to be improving.

Is this normal? The internet seems to say it is but I don’t see any other children bringing out the nappy sacks of shame at the end of the day.

I suppose I’m looking for people who have experienced this and have some good news stories because I’m feeling very worn out over it all.

We had this but in yr 1. DS was not going for a wee all day at school. On wraparound care days he couldn't hold it any longer and had wee accidents. The root cause was not liking hand dryers in the KS1 toilets.

Solution was that his teacher sent him for a wee in the reception toilets (no hand dryers there) once the reception class had gone and before he went into after school club.

Accidents are fairly normal in reception but as you've identified a pattern then the school should be prepared to try a few strategies to help.

Yes normal. Ask the teacher to make him go to the toilet before leaving the classroom to go to wraparound. Loads of them come out bursting for a wee at the end of the day.

Yeah,.happened with mine - again because he didn't like the toilets so wouldn't go. Solved by being allowed to go to a different toilet at set times.

Thanks everyone. That’s the reassurance I was looking for 😅

We had a better week with only 1 day of accidents, so onwards and upwards hopefully
