I've tried to do things right but apparently failed. Tales of turning things around at 40 very welcome today!

After a poor and turbulent childhood I met a man I thought was stable and sensible. We got married and had a child but it turned out he was a covert narcissist and was emotionally and financially abusive. He managed to suck all money i'd ever had off me so I left penniless at 32. I was advised by solicitors he'd been clever so I couldn't fight for much in the divorce, all I managed was him agreeing to pay the debts he'd run up in my name.

So, I started to graft and in 7yrs went from a zero hours contract at a pub to earning 80k. Unfortunately that 80k was an FTC and due to the economy I can't see myself continuing this, I have burnt through all but 3k trying to find work for a year (and no jobs lower down the chain will hire me as im overqualified, even though I dumb it down as much as possible, once you get to the reference-checking phase, it falls apart).

The problem is, I bought a house. I bought at the peak of the market just before the truss budget. It needed work, modernisation, which I did. Put all my spare money in. Now I am told it's only worth pretty much what I paid for it. I do believe what I am told on that front; the market is shit, and apparently especially so in my area. But, it does mean every spare penny from the last 7yrs has gone up in a puff of smoke. I have to sell and try to move to where the work is, with fuel and interest prices I can't afford to live here anymore.

So, I am left with the realisation that I have absolutely nothing to show for myself at the age of 40. I've got no meaningful pension. 3k in savings left which will have to go on a rental deposit and moving. Wow. Back to square 1.

Are you in work at the moment? It might help to say what industry you are in as people will be able to provide more specific help. How have you burnt through £3 looking for work?

Your money hasn’t gone up in smoke from the house. If you’d not done the work the house would still have lost value and a lot of people wouldn’t even consider a renovation now due to building work prices. House prices have fallen in general, so any new price will also be reduced. Your house has provided you somewhere to live so it’s not a sunk cost.

I'm not in work, i'm interviewing for bar work this week. I've done other temp jobs but its not been enough to keep this house long term and thats where the savings have gone.

Unfortunately I'm extremely deeply technically knowledgeable in a specific industry in STEM and the contracts have dried up. I need to career change really but have no quals outside this. I often get down to the final 2 in interviews but there's always someone who has actually done THAT role up against me so my 'transferable skills' arent enough.

There will be a whole raft of new vocational courses starting over the next few years to provide more practically based subjects for teens. VCSEs, V levels, T levels.

It’s quite possible that your skills could be of use in education. Now is the time to start looking into it.

My father didn’t believe women needed to be educated as their prime role in life was to marry and stay at home as a housewife. I attended a poor school and didn’t do well.

When I got divorced I thought now is the time to do something with my life. By the age of 40 I had GCSEs all grade A, A levels grade A and a place to study nursing.

What’s the STEM subject? We hire lots of people that want to do a cross move.

I'm in my 50s,never been married, never had children, don't own my home. Why do you think you've got nothing to show for your life?

I don't really want to out myself, I'm looking for solidarity and inspiration here rather than a job offer, thanks though!

Many people are in that situation in middle age. You've got a child, transport, a roof over your head. You're doing better than a lot of people.

minset reset! You have age and experience and adaptability. You have a great deal more to give/ do.

Don’t give up!
