Travel for work - how much daily?

My job involves travelling to homes of students as a tutor, or meeting them in public spaces such as libraries.
I'm currently finding myself doing about 36 miles a day, just under 1.5 hours in the car. It feels like a lot? Or perhaps I will get used to it? I am not paid for mileage.
How does this compare with others re work travel?

I travel 1-4 hours for my job, I cover a large area. But get car allowance and mileage paid.

DH used to commute 75 minutes each way across London. I used to drive 75 minutes to work each day. Not every job can be local.

I do 2x15 km a day which all together by bus/metro is 2 hours 15 min. Around £7 a day.
I don't drive due to a medical condition.
No reimbursement.

Well people will travel anywhere between nothing, because they live on their work site, or a short walk/cycle away or they could be spending hours a day, sometimes at their own expense.

What you've said sounds typical for someone who travels to different, but fairly local, sites during the course of a working day. It doesn't sound particularly onerous, eg if you worked at a fixed site 18 miles away and it took you 45 minutes each way, it's the same as what you're doing and you'd not get reimbursed for the time or money for that either.

However, depending on the nature of your work (eg are you employed or self employed, how your 'normal place or work' is defined and and how the tutoring is charged and paid for) you might be able to claim for the mileage either as a mileage rate or at least a reduction in the tax you pay.

If you are employed and expected to drive using your own vehicle and fuel, I would not be doing that without mileage allowance. It’s different if you’re self-employed, then you need to simply set your rates accordingly. That seems a perfectly reasonable amount to travel daily. But I sure wouldn’t be doing it for free!

My commute to work is about 18 miles / 40 minutes, so the round trip is similar to yours although it's in one go at the beginning and end of the day rather than several short journeys. Obviously I'm not paid for my commute, but it's part of my decision to take that job rather than one closer to home which might be less good in other ways. Are you happy overall with your work and your pay? If not, you can try to address it by raising your hourly rate or by looking for a job which pays travel expenses. But if you're happy generally, you need to consider this as part of the overall package.

5 minute bike ride. No way I'd go back to long daily commutes.

TheSandgroper · 24/09/2026 07:40

Must you travel to them or can you find a spot each day and have them come to you?

You probably can’t make wholesale changes until September but you can start thinking about it.

CorporalJohn · 24/09/2026 08:13

My commute was 34 miles each way. Took 55 minutes (unless the motorway was jammed).

In London, by train, tube and walking my commute was an hour each way.

FunPartyIdeas · 24/09/2026 08:35

@TheSandgroper They unfortunately wouldn't be able to travel to me. I am required to travel to them, which I understand, but the agency doesn't pay travel expenses.
It just feels like a lot at the moment.

Under Universal Credit rules, claimants are generally expected to take up jobs where the commute is up to 90 minutes each way (3 hours total per day).

Having said that, in your case, OP, I would regard the travel between clients as part of the job and therefore payable. Is it worth trying to find an agency that does pay for travel time/mileage costs?

Sheswatchingyou · 24/09/2026 09:27

I drive approx. 85 miles every day for work. I get paid by the mile up to 4200 (or about that) it’s a good rate although with the cost of fuel not so good as it was after 4200 its drop significantly. I guess in a 7 1/2 hour day I spend about 2 - 2 1/2 hours in the car every day. There are days when I think I never want to get in a car again!
I could do a very similiar job where I just drive to work and park the car although not get paid any mileage. But I love my job and no job is perfect driving is it’s downside.

Are you the same poster who posted a while ago about an agency that kept cancelling jobs at short notice without paying you?

If so, is there any way of cutting out the agency and working directly for your clients? They'll likely pay less even if you charge more to cover travel, because no-one will be paying the agency for acting as a go between. You'll also be able to set your own T&Cs

FunPartyIdeas · 24/09/2026 23:01

@Bjorkdidit Unfortunately that's not possible as the contract for the students I work with is via the LA and also funded by the LA (hours are in school hours).
The policy is no pay if more than 24 hrs notice which is also somewhat challenging!
But reluctant to leave as I love what I do!
