Neighbour being abusive about me on Neighbourhood WhatsApp group.

The neighbour who backs on to me has a beautiful cat who is always in my garden usually to annoy my Corgi cross by sitting just out of his reach looking smug. Yesterday I had a phone call from my gardener they.are going to spray strong weedkiller at the bottom of the garden tonight at around 5 and I will have to keep my dog away from the area for at least 12 hours. I remembered the cat and decided to pop round and warn the neighbour, I introduced myself and and managed to say the word cat when she slammed the door in my face and refused to answer when I knocked again so I left a note saying what was happening and I also said that I would check with the gardener that a cat would be OK after 12 hours and I would let her know if it needs to be longer. I ended up by saying her cat is beautiful.

This morning I saw lots of messages on WhatsApp about me the neighbour had posted ' my ignorant pink haired neighbour came round to complain about my cat and even posted a note through my door' she went on to say she just tore the note up. Obviously there were a lot of replies telling her to tell me to F off one even said she had seen me around during the day saying I must be on benefits as I don't work. I have just replied saying I came round to warn her that I am having weedkiller sprayed in the area I normally see her cat and I didn't want him to be poisoned I also mentioned my dog needing to be kept away from the area for 12 hours and I am going to check if it would be longer for a cat. I have had several replies saying well done for thinking about the cat all positive but nothing as yet from the neighbour or her gobby mate

Oh dear, well now she looks a bit silly so she will probably go quiet on there!

Glad you could post and set the record straight.

StormGazing · 23/09/2026 15:57

The neighbour is clearly batshit! Hold your head up high and keep professional - the neighbours will know who the idiot is I’m sure they have form already if they were so bizarre

Ilikewinter · 23/09/2026 15:57

What a feckin idiot she is. Im sooo glad you replied, hope she feels like a twat!!!

FluffMagnet · 23/09/2026 15:58

Well she looks the prize fool, doesn't she? I imagine she feels pretty humiliated now and will just go quiet for a bit. Doesn't hugely help you with your predicament though - maybe politely Whatsapp her privately to remind her of the dates. And is there any chance your gardener can cover the treated area for a bit if she ignores you? Just in case she latterly accuses you of poisoning the cat...

sherbetlemonade · 23/09/2026 15:58

Why are you allowing your gardener to use powerful, toxic weedkiller in your garden?

Momon45 · 23/09/2026 16:03

I wouldn't allow my gardener to use weed killer . It will poison other wildlife including birds .

GingerBeverage · 23/09/2026 16:07

What on earth is he trying to kill? Japanese knotweed?

The area is at the end of my 100 foot garden not somewhere we normally sit and use and is just a jungle it's surrounded by high fences all round but obviously the cat is not dettered. Obviously I will be speaking to the gardener before he sprays to ensure I am happy

There is no other wildlife there it's just a tangled mess of brambles and bindweed

Of course there's wildlife!

That is exactly where there will be wildlife.

YANBU about the neighbour. You are about the weedkiller.

There will be loads of wildlife in there. A gardener should be able to tackle that without spraying toxins on it that will seep into the ground.

The weed killer will poison the worms which will poison the hedgehogs and the birds. The animals that scavenge the dying hedgehogs and birds will also be poisoned. The weed killer will filter though into the water system and contaminate that. And so it goes on.
Ask your gardener to get a decent strimmer with a metal disk on it to cut down the weeds and brambles. If he does that twice a year it will deal with that area.
Also you can just leave a wild area for hedgehogs to overwinter in.

Most of us it was set up when we were having issues with the roads being dug up every two weeks

Do people really carry on like this?

seahorsessky · 23/09/2026 17:11

Given how many people wfh, that is a stupid thing to say. Even years ago, some people do shirt work or work odd hours, so being seen at home does not mean you're on benefits. And there are people who work Mon-Fri who still claim benefits. I wouldn't bother trying to engage her with common sense though.

Stillamum3 · 23/09/2026 17:23

The weedkiller is most probaly Glyphosate based, which only works through the chlorophyll in the leaves and is neutralised as soon as it hits the ground. It will not poison any worms or wildlife.

Oh it's ok I am a pensioner which is why I do not work but have refused to engage with her over that
