purplecorkheart · 23/09/2026 13:20

Carvery would be my choice if I had to pick between the two.

Lomonald · 23/09/2026 13:20

Carvery!

Arlanymor · 23/09/2026 13:20

Carvery 100%

DearlyDiego · 23/09/2026 13:20

In true Mumsnet style of being difficult, I'm going to say neither. Both are, to my mind, dinner options, not lunch.

I'd go for a café for something like a baked potato or a toastie for lunch.

TheChosenTwo · 23/09/2026 13:22

I’d opt for a chippy based on roasts never being that great when you’re out but I’d never make fish and chips at home.

But then the op probably wouldn't need a big dinner, so no cooking which is a win/win surely?

@DearlyDiego they're the closest options - & I'm hungry!

I wish I had a decent carvery near me, 😕

I concur wholeheartedly than I'm being unreasonable!

Yeah but if have a big lunch, you just have a toastie or baked potato for dinner 🤷‍♀️

Aposterhasnoname · 23/09/2026 13:35

What did you get in the end?

Was it a choice of takeaway or eating in or could you have the fish and chips there?

See this is where you're going wrong. Baked potatoes and toasties are very quick and easy to make at home, and the baked potato in a cafe will highly likely be a reheated monstrosity. So not worth paying cafe prices for.

Whereas most people don't have decent deep fat fryers at home and a roast involves time and lots of peeling and chopping. Plus while they cost a lot more than they used to, both fish and chips and carvery are quite cheap for a cooked meal out. So I'd get one of those and have a toastie or a baked potato at home later.
