It's the little things?

Maybe this shouldn't be such a big deal, but I'd been single and (happily) doing everything for myself for a long time.

BF stayed over last night, as he has a few times. It's bin day, they came early, he brought the bins in, without being asked or mentioning it, as he left.

I mean I guess if it makes you happy that is good. I wouldn't have even noticed lol

Porridged · 23/09/2026 12:09

🤣 Well isn't that a typically MN response? It was a little thing that did make me smile, but there's always someone who wants to knock it out of you, when if you think it's insignificant, staying quiet would have been a perfectly adequate response.

I was not in the least knocking you I clearly said if it makes you happy good.

If you say so 🤣

Yes, I do.

That’s a lovely thing of them to do, OP. It’s says more about the character of the less observant above. It really is the small things :)

That is very mean I have to say. Just because I would not have noticed someone taking my bins in without them telling me does not mean you can pile on and be horrible. The op has already made it clear she feels I was being disingenuous.

You said yourself you wouldn’t have noticed (somehow, at all) and I said you weren’t very observant, how is that a mean pile on? It was a self admittance on your part!

Surely you'd have noticed when you went to put the bin out and it was already out?

Rondayvu · 23/09/2026 12:40

Yes the next time I went out but op posted early in the morning and he had not told her is all. No matter I shall leave the thread as I am misunderstood here. Enjoy the new relationship op.

A colleague’s DH dropped by work on a snowy day and automatically cleaned off her car before he drove off. They’d been married over 20 years so it was sweet he thought about it.
My DH won over my mother when, for my first birthday as a couple, he gave me a card from my cats (he was not a cat lover himself, though I did catch him talking to them in the kitchen once). He was his 40s (so not a soppy youth) and it was such a thoughtful thing for him to do - she said that said more about him than the amazing weekend (at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saison) he treated me too.

Yes that is nice.

It's a small thing but its thoughtful. Like when I saw next doors cat roll over on our drive in front of our builder and he put down what he was carrying so he could stroke the cat. Or when I saw a colleague on the way to the station stop and help a mum with a pram up some steps as the rest of the rush hour crowd surged past. Or when my daughter had a new friend round for dinner and they both brought their plates into the kitchen and said thank you very much. (I do expect my kids to do this but let them off if they have a friend round.)

It's not a big show off gesture but nice little things showing respect and care for others.

Yes it's lovely. My husband had an early golf session. He knew it was possible I'd had a bad night because I said last night I was half expecting it and he came in and gave me a proper hug and kiss because he remembered it. I think you know when you've got a keeper .
