How do others cope with sensory overload in the evening?

How do you deal with things when it becomes to much I have ADHD and im sure some Autism, im having a major sensory overload, I dont want things touching my skin, the pjs that usually help are in the wash and I can't be arsed to sort them out, I feel trapped. I need a bath but I have to wait for the hot water to heat up, and it's taking so long! my daughter is in her pjs watching tv but its way to early to go to sleep, I feel really over whelmed with everything this evening. what ever I put on just seems to tight even though its not. I cant not wear anything either because that makes me cringe. argh it's so hard to deal with sometimes. everything feels itchy and horrible!

Could you put on some comfy clothes and head outside for some fresh air while the water heats up?

Sometimes when I get sensory overload I have to put in earphones and blast music - sounds ridiculous but it helps

Any calming music like nature sounds

Less lights

Calming music or some relaxation rhythm to soothe the irritation. Prefering to wear plain cotton or material that feels soothing to the body can also be used.

I went outside in a oversized t shirt with my AirPods in, listened to a few songs full blast while watching my dogs play, that helped a lot... then by the time I come in the water had heated and I managed to have a bath. I still feel really over whelmed but it's better. I think because I no I have so much to do and I cant motivate myself to do it makes it worse. My daughter also has ADHD and doesn't sleep so going for an early night isn't going to work. She has now gone to her room to watch the tv so I have taken this time to just chill in my room. hopefully she sleeps so I can Smile

I put my AirPods in and sat outside for a few minutes while I let my dogs out, seemed to help. I hate this feeling of being so overwhelmed, it's awful. My daughter gets like it as well and its hard for the both off us, luckily shes watching tv in her room and is chilling out. Thank You!

I hear you OP I have AuDHD too and clothes piss me off but so does being cold. I’m in PJs now. They were lovely and soft earlier and now they feel itchy! Why?! 😖 baths definitely help me.

Hghardy · 22/09/2026 20:05

I have a shower when I get in from work then put on a pair of cotton pj's I love M&S ones if it's cold I'll put my oodie on or lay on the sofa with my weighted blanket.

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 22/09/2026 20:06

Weighted blanket or any other form of deep pressure touch
My adult children still like to use our garden swing and sit out on it listening to music in the evening
Quickshift therapeutic listening app
