Constant scenes with women sat on the toilet in tv dramas

What is it with this trend for plonking the woman character on the toilet?
It seems to be in almost everything these days. Adding nothing at all to the story.

Do the writers think this adds realism? What is the purpose?

I have just started watching Film Club on BBCiplayer and ten minutes into the first episode there is the main female character sat on the loo and her boyfriend is not only in there talking to her but they actually have a snog whilst she is still on the throne.

Why???

God I hate this too. Never seems to be the men on the shitter 24/7, even though that would be a more accurate reflection of reality.

What gets me is shower scenes. Nothing happens in the shower scene, just a shot of her showering then getting out. Wonderful, really thickened the plot that did, great contribution to the storyline. 🙄

The only shower scene I have scene of worth is the one in the Grudge.

There’s a fair bit of men at urinals…

Hate it too! Also them sitting hunched in a bath

I used to point out that you never saw people using the loo or even going in/ out of the loo on tv. Only men at urinals. So I don’t mind it - it’s more real! We all use the loo multiple times a day after all.

I hate it too and definitely noticed it more recently.

I think its only a matter of time before you will see someone having a poo, it's about the only thing I haven't seen shown on TV or film so far. 🙄

Lifesyoungdream · 22/09/2026 21:50

It doesn’t really add anything to a drama showing someone on the toilet. I wish they wouldn’t do it.

Would anybody really ever snog their boyfriend whilst sat using the loo?
I can't think of anything worse.

I had a boyfriend once who came into the bathroom whilst I was having a bath and he had a poo.
I was revolted.
Is nothing sacred?
