Working with colleagues in foreign offices

I often have to work with our Paris office. As in I talk and walk with our french colleagues on teams.

This might sound like a stupid question but is it weird for me to greet them with "Bonjour"?

No. Why should it be that?

ginasevern · 22/09/2026 18:35

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Would it be weird if they said hello to you in English?

I work with a lot of foreign colleagues and clients. Perfectly normal to greet politely in the language that is foreign to you, then switch to whichever language you've got in common. I say bos dias to the Portuguese then we all switch to English or Spanish.

I always make the effort to use as much French or German as I can remember if talking to anyone from those countries. I don’t think that’s weird to do so, and whilst I’m sure inwardly they are probably laughing at my terrible GCSE level (from 30 years ago) attempt, they are always very kind and appear pleased someone has made the effort rather than just assume they’ll speak English.

My absolute non-German speaking colleagues do manage a "Hallo" or "Guten Morgen" when they are on a call with our HQ in Frankfurt.
