True story. My parents befriended a Chinese student studying in the UK. we took her for a car ride in the countryside. There was a cyclist in front of us and my DM said oh that person in front cycles like Chinese person, goodness knows what she meant.

We overtook the cyclist who was indeed Chinese and our student recognised her as a friend from her village back in China!

British people should be proud of Britain. Doesn't mean we can't be friends with other countries though.

Patriotism - I associate with being proud just because of where you are born seems silly to me and it’s also behind most wars - our country is better than yours, you should be like us …

living where you live doesn’t mean you should value it above other places which is what patriotism seems to do

being proud of individuals, or groups who have made things better is one thing. Being proud just because you are British or Russian or Chinese or American - being proud that you did absolutely nothing to make yourself any of these - seems stupid

Welcome 😊. I went on a wonderful tour of China a few years ago and found the people so friendly and welcoming. I'll never forget waltzing in the park in the evening with a lovely Chinese gentleman, and joining in with the line dancing ladies. Do you go to the park in the evening? It amazed me, the practice of everyone being out in the parks in the evening, playing Mahjong, playing instruments, the tai chi, the dancing. I found the Chinese people have a great sense of humour too.

What's your life like? Do you work, have children, a husband, pets?

VPNs are common and especially in Shenzhen (so near HK) people may get access to HK networks which are not yet so heavily firewalled.

There are always people who take it too far.

However, I would say that patriotism is far from "doing nothing". The opposite, in fact. Pride for the culture and values you have and share with others in the same country is not silly. It's about the work you've put in, the taxes you've paid, the standards you have upheld, the kids and young people you have helped mentor. It is acknowledging all the peoples' combined efforts. It's what keeps a country going strong and stable. Do you really think there's no difference between here and Afghanistan, and culture hasn't got a great deal to do with it?

what do you love most about where you live? I’m from Lincolnshire, a rural county in the UK.

I know a few people who’ve lived or are living in China. 🇨🇳 it’s not for me but I can see how the life must appeal to some. Lots of history and culture.
