If you are still unmetered, can I ask your yearly bill please?
We are in a 3-bed semi in the Midlands and paying just under £1k a year, which I have been told must be wrong!

It doesn't matter what anyone else pays, you will pay your rateable value of your property times the price

What is your rateable value and how much is your water company's rate?

Check both of those and check the multiplication as your first step

But shouldn't it be similar to neighbour we are attached to if not metered?

It will depend if their rateable value is the same as yours

Have you looked into getting a meter?

Apparently we have one but we're not using it? Wouldn't I know if one was fitted? I've lived here 28 years.
Maybe it would be cheaper to start using it.

I just thought it strange I pay £300 a year more than my neighbour.
I can't see why the rateable value would be different so I'm just trying to understand it really.

I think you need to speak to your water company, having a meter but not using it sounds strange and also to check the rateable value

Looking at my account, I think our water company has fitted them in our area without us knowing...
'Your property already has a water meter installed.
This is used to check for leaks and monitor demand on the network, and already records how much water you use.'
Our bill has gone up by £440 since 23/24 year.
The rateable value hasn't changed, so it really must have gone up!
I'm thinking if the meter already records how much water we use then they should be able to tell us if it would be cheaper to move to metered.

They have started fitting the meters under the pavement where your feed comes off the main pipe. Absolute bugger to read if you have bad eyesight and can't kneel. It's under that tiny flap.

I have gone metered, but been told it doesn't go live for year, so despite having a meter, I am still playing exorbitant water rates. Why don't we all refuse to pay?

Can you show us a copy of your bill (with your personal details blocked out)?
I used to work in customer accounts for a water company.

I can't have a water meter due to sharing the pipe with 2 other houses and my water bill went up from £500 odd to nearly £1000. I asked for an assessed charge due to there only being 2 sometimes 3 of us here and my bill has gone back down to £400 odd.
Might be worth asking.
