For anyone interested in the removal of the masts from the SS Richard Montgomery in the Thames, it’s happening now!

The first mast was removed yesterday. There is a time-lapse video on Facebook under James Bell Photography that shows the mast being lifted out of the water. I can’t seem to share it.

One down, two to go!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Cradle in place above water.

I'm sure they're very busy down below.

Tide coming in at the moment, against the river's flow, so the water isn't very fast. Yesterday evening at the ebb it was quite the rush.

Think that white boat alongside was the day shift arriving.

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 09:23

Some bods climbing over the masts now.

They're making me nervous!

On a train and the feed won’t load! Going to be SO mad if I miss something!

You'll probably hear it if something happens

Thanks for the heads up

I’m on the Essex side and can see it from the end of my road. Might have a wander down there later.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:40

ACTION!

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:44

I've just tuned back in and there are folk all over it.

At first I thought it had changed position. Now I think it's just the tide is so high the shapes look different.

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 11:48

CliffeHanger if your user name is indicative of your location, we are not far apart.

I wish they'd done a blog or something for this, so we had an idea of what's happening, just out of interest.

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 11:49

Lots of people out on the platform, as if they're expecting something to happen.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:51

<waves>

Though from a distance because I'm not actually there this week.

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 11:52

So if it goes up, you're well out of the way!

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:52

And now they've all cleared off in their rubber dinghy.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:52

My thoughts exactly! Grin

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:56

I've long wondered whether I was in 🪟 breaking distance or not.Grin

Probably just a big dull boom. And of course something of a tidal wave – which mightn't be great for the coastguard cottages and sheep down on the marshes.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 11:58

Tidal wave maybe also unfortunate for @DialSquare in Essex...

Let's all just hope not, eh?

My road does go uphill quite a bit so hopefully should still be fine even if there is a tidal wave.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 12:15

Glad to hear it! Grin

AlexandraCarrington · 24/09/2026 12:49

Second mast lifted! I just went to do something in the kitchen and missed it! It's dangling from the crane now.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 12:49

Missed it here, too!

Me too! Shame you can't rewind the feed.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 12:51

Well done those folks!

I wonder what happens now? Does it stay cluttering up the barge, or get hoisted again onto something to take it away?

I don't see the first mast on the barge, so presumably the latter.

CliffeHanger · 24/09/2026 12:52

Ooh yes, mast on the move again.
