What’s your favourite screen adaptation of Wuthering Heights?

And who is your favourite Heathcliff/Cathy?

It was Ralph Fiennes in the 1992 version but I watched the 2009 version last night and Tom hardy is now my favourite Heathcliff.

Who is yours?

TIA

It’s Ralph for me too.

Lemonfrost · 19/09/2026 19:58

Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. I absolutely loved it.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/09/2026 20:00

I like the Tom Hardy adaptation the best, I think it’s the most faithful. The Ralph Fiennes version is very good too.

mooshkymoo · 19/09/2026 20:03

I really didn’t like the most recent one.

Everygoodnameisgone · 19/09/2026 20:08

I fell in love with Wuthering Heights and the Brontes after watching it as a TV serial in the late 70s. No idea who the actors were and I was probably too young to be watching it anyway.
It's still one of my favourite books nearly 50 years later.

RhannionKPSS · 19/09/2026 20:11

Timothy Dalton and Anna Calder Marshall , Tim Dalton is also the best Mr Rochester imo

jiffypipe · 19/09/2026 20:13

I know this will be dreadfully unpopular, but in terms of enjoyment I enjoyed Emerald Fennel’s film the most. I didn’t enjoy the book, found too dreary, as were the previous adaptations (obviously not meant to be uplifting!) but I really appreciated the artistic interpretation of this film, and Charli XCX’s soundtrack.

OutOnTheWilyWindyMoors · 19/09/2026 20:14

It didn’t show as having posted, it wouldn’t go when I pressed enter then I realised I was in the wrong section as I wanted it in books.

None of them, they’re all bloody awful, for different reasons. At least the Ralph Fiennes version covers the whole story, although Juliette Binoche and her accent were very distracting.

Thanks all. It’s interesting to see which versions people prefer and it’s making me realise how many versions I’ve yet to see.

I’m not sure that anyone will beat Tom Hardy as Heathcliff for me now though. He earned it for that wail/scream alone when he’s told about Cathy. He sounds as though his soul is being torn from his body.

It doesn’t make sense if you posted the other one first

Actually, in hindsight, I’d probably agree with this. It was almost as if she wasn’t trying to make it like the book, so it could almost be enjoyed on a different level .

I posted this one first, Sherlock, I didn’t realise it had gone as it kept showing it wouldn’t go. I didn’t realise it had posted until later. I’ve had trouble with MN all day and now it’s double posting.

You should ask MN to amalgamate the two threads

I preferred the unedited version

It isn’t troubling me but feel free to do so if it’s troubling you so much or you could just ignore both.

Yes exactly, I think she was just exploring the feeling of their relationship, it was never meant to be a faithful adaptation, it doesn’t even have the next generation (which is why I think I enjoyed it as it was the second half of the book with the younger generation that I found really hard going!) and of course it means the film misses one of the core themes of generational trauma, but honestly I was ok with that!

I really need to watch this version. I found it’s available on Youtube so I’ll have to make a point of watching it soon. Thank you for reminding me to do so.
