Do your children come home from school looking like they've swum a bog and battled a dragon?

My son is in primary one and without fail, every day he comes home from school monumentally filthy. His trousers are thick with mud, chalk or paint, his socks and hair are full of grass, he has something unidentifiably sticky on his jumper. Literally everything is having to be washed after every wear. He usually also has some kind of mud on his nose and pen all over his hands.

I don't mind particularly, he's leaving the school gates cheerful and having had a great day, but is he uniquely grubby or is this just what primary school children are like?!

I was like this it used to drive my beautifully turned out, 'naice' dress shop owning mum spare 😆 she'd be constantly asking what people would think when her daughter was a scruff. I have improved but frankly only slightly and it's been a while since I was in primary. I do try but then I get distracted and stick my hand in something and wipe it on my leg absentmindedly. And kick mud up my legs as I walk somehow?

My Y1 kid is every other day like you describe. Complete with lunch still around their face and in their hair. But my gawd the socks! 5mins ago they were white. They've been in your shoes all day. How have they come home brown 🙈😆

My DS came home from reception one day with his trousers so muddy that they stood up on their own after he had taken them off 😆

This is what the best schools have the children coming home like! I always say it makes me happy to see them covered in their day. Yoghurt is annoying though, lol. Have a complete fresh change of uniform available for every day. I’m glad he’s enjoying P1.

My now adult ds was a keen football and rugby player at school. He would come home, plastered in mud, and sit at the dining table emptying half the fridge in to himself as a pre dinner snack. Then he would shower! Fond memories.

I remember those days fondly. The day DD2 fell over into the paint. Or when DD1 and friends got hold of a hosepipe in their outdoor classroom so decided to make a mud kitchen (the only time I failed to get the stains out of a school dress).

Pen, mud, paint, glue, blood, glitter etc.. they found it somehow.

The good old days.

I'm glad it's not just mine!

I love these days. Happy times indeed <3

😂😂

When I left school I worked on a farm and I used to lean my jeans up against the wall to dry overnight. No point in wearing clean ones the next day!

BlackeyedSusan · 18/09/2026 01:26

Yeah, mine was like that too. Take after their mother, sadly.

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 18/09/2026 11:58

I wish mine had had the chance to get as dirty as that in reception. Their playground was mostly artificial

mindutopia · 18/09/2026 14:16

No, sometimes a bit of food spillage or some pen on a shirt, but I often re-use uniform an extra day or two without washing.

GuavaBanana · 18/09/2026 14:21

DD is like this but DS has always come back looking exactly the same as when he left in the morning. DS's uniform had survived in perfect condition for DD, but DD can get a polo shirt from new to rags in three wears.

Two very different children!

Our schools says black or grey socks only! Such a win

MannyTeddy · 20/09/2026 11:22

My DD used to come out of school with the wildest hair ever seen, she would go in with clips, hairband, ponytail and come out with her bobble barely in her hair! To be fair, she was probably cartwheeling around the whole time. 🥰🙄

Kensingtonbuns · 20/09/2026 11:25

Mine would just be a bit grubby but quite often wearing someone else's trousers/shorts (even on days when it didn't seem to be a PE day).

MeowDoku · 20/09/2026 11:27

I struggle to get DS from home to the school gate without him suddenly looking like a swamp monster! What makes it worse is his best friend is one of those children who always looks immaculate 🤦🏼‍♀️

user1471538283 · 20/09/2026 11:37

Oh yes my DS was like this even into high school! I'd see these beautifully turned out children at the end of the day and there he'd be, absolutely covered in something! On one occasion he only had one shoe!

Even then it made me laugh. The best I hoped for with my DS was that he started the day looking presentable!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2026 12:01

DD2. Went in looking ready for a school uniform photoshoot for John Lewis, emerged six and a bit hours later looking like the dragon probably won but decided against eating the tiny peasant because she was probably going off.

Every day. All the other children coming out looking much as they did when they walked in the gate.

No re-wearing uniform with her. Five shirts, three jumpers, three of pinafore/summer dress so I would always have something clean and dry ready for the morning - and if a pair of knitted tights made it through six hours without being shredded at the knees (they were cheaper than school trousers with her record) and could be washed to get the mud, dust, leaves, paint, lunch, grit, blood and Heaven knows whatever else was embedded in the knit, it was an absolute result.

ETA: This was also the child who wore a bright red coat when every other girl in KS1 had either a mauve or pink one specifically so I could pick her out in the mass of children disappearing off into the distance in search of more trouble.

Red Coat was known.

Yep. DS who is 6 (Y2) comes home pretty filthy most days, to be honest I’m happy to see it because it means he’s been playing outside and enjoying himself! Usually he will have some of his lunch on him as well as dirt/mud, pen, paint etc. I have to have clean uniform for him every day though can quite often send the same jumper because he’s also the kid that removes his jumper as soon as we arrive at school and forgets to put it back on later.

I don’t want him to miss out on anything because he’s worried about getting grubby. We love that episode of Bluey where their friend Judo isn’t allowed to play in the mud with them as her mum doesn’t want her to get dirty.
