Elec Bill - 3bed house. 3 people - happy to use Dishwasher, tumble dryer etc. Work from home. EV.

My electric bill is £170 a month.

I have an EV which charges only once or twice a week (overnight on cheap tariff)
We use dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer without thought. (Definitely used washing line during hot summer though).

We both work from home but only use laptops.

We have oil heating and don’t even have an immersion.

Why is our bill so high?

what is your bill in similar circumstances please?

I pay £160 for a 5 bed house, 3 people, EV. But I do the tumble drier, washing machine and dishwasher between midnight and 5am when it's cheaper. Getting an EV and switching onto eon next drive actually reduced my electricity bill!

tourdefrance · 16/09/2026 21:07

Are you on the standard rate / energy cap or a fixed rate? Have a look at money saving expert to see if you can get a cheaper rate.
Do you have a smart meter? If you do, you should be able to see when you are using lots of electricity.

workingcocker · 16/09/2026 21:08

We are on Octopus intelligence so it’s cheap to charge the car. It’s cheap over night. Dishwasher doesn’t have a timer but the washing machine and dryer does so we could delay cheaper times.

That doesn't seem hugely over priced to me but I might be wrong, would it be ok to share something I've just remembered that may be worth considering?

When I lived on the farm (1991) we had month after month of high bills and do you know what it was? Mr Jenkins (who has since been in prison for fraud and is a well known conman) plugged an extension lead into a socket we didn't look at and was using it to shear his sheep flock. We estimate he stole 3300 pounds of electric which in 1991 was a fortune

Bleppington · 16/09/2026 21:13

We use [...] tumble dryer without thought

That's why it's so high, I bet.

Also how efficient is your fridge/freezer as old ones can really chew through electricity.

But any money it's the tumble drier. I've never owned one and still manage to dry washing including washable nappies, so it's not an essential at all!

Luckily for us considering we have 3 dogs there are no sheep nearby.

I don’t think anyone else is using our leccy thankfully! 😅

We're only 2 people but our cooking, shower etc is electric, only the heating is gas. Our electricity bill is about £55 a month.

The tumble dryer will be part of it.

How is your shower water heated?Electric showers are expensive to run.

How efficient are your appliances? We swapped from a very old fridge freezer to a new one and that alone probably saved £20 a month.

Any gaming PCs? Neighbours tapped into your supply to run a weed farm?

We didn’t use it when it was hot. We don’t really have room to dry it inside the house.

I spoke to someone about solar today who said the average electric bill in the UK is £70 a month!!

I wouldn’t call that high!!! Ours is £200, two people

Morecoffeeneedef · 16/09/2026 21:23

Ours is 50 in the summer, 85- 140 in the winter when we have an electric heater on in the kitchen, set to 16C.
. We have a washing machine and dishwasher and a tumble dryer for emergencies only. no EV.

£200 is astonishingly high. Do you have inefficient electric heating? We're two people and our bill for gas and electricity has just gone up to £110 pm

£70 pm is probably about right. I don't know how much electric cars cost but it shouldn't be much on an EV tariff.

OnlyGreenClothes · 16/09/2026 21:34

I have a tumble dryer, the kind you don't put a hose outside and it's pretty efficient- it doesn't cost a fortune at all. Our bill was high last December and we found a vampire appliance that had put it right up - a small heater in the shed! Have a look around for something like that?

Sparrowsandbudgies · 16/09/2026 21:36

That sounds quite good to me. 4 of us here, dc aged 23 and 14 and me and dh. Everyone gaming / using the internet non stop, electric showers, tumble dryer used every day etc - our electric with Octopus is £240 a month. (Gas is around £30 summer months, winter obviously more).

For 2 people that seems crazy high, what type of appliances are you running ?

NancyThompson · 16/09/2026 21:45

That's steep, I think I'm also in a three bed - exposed, detached, and fully electric as we have a heat pump, and we pay less that. No solar, have a tumble drier etc, only thing is we don't have an EV.

DemBonesDemBones · 16/09/2026 21:51

We pay about £200 a month, 6 bed ancient house. I thought that was really high but compared with Dad and sister who live in a 4 and a 3 bed house and they both pay about the same!

PenelopePinkerton · 16/09/2026 22:03

Mine is £370 but it’s a large house and there are 8 of us.

My electricity is around £80 a month. All electric cooking, gas boiler running all hot water and heating. 2 adults, small terraced house.

NCTDN · 16/09/2026 22:10

Tumble driers are so so expensive to run. You can get timer plugs for your dishwasher so it goes on at night. We are very similar to you but have two EVs so most nights there is a car charging. We pay £135/month. Everything goes on at night during the cheap rate.

CaffeinatedMum · 16/09/2026 22:13

We have similar cords but four people and pay £140 a month. I can only assume it’s because we rarely tumble dry anything (we do tonnes of washing though).

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 16/09/2026 22:20

2 of us in a 4/5:bed house.
I run dishwasher overnight every 2 days, and run washing machine overnight 5 or 6 times a week. I never use a tumble dryer. We charge my car overnight about twice a week. We've just replaced an ancient fridge-freezer for a new on, and I swear we're saving money already.
We're on Octopus Intelligent Go, and I've just dropped to £190 per month - but we're £700 in credit!!
Tumble dryers just eat money.

hotmumshit · 16/09/2026 22:26

that sounds good - 100 pm here for 2 people

washing machine and tvs on through the day and the fan during the summer. I think my fridge freezer might be running that up too

Selkin · 16/09/2026 22:35

I run the washer and tumble dryer 4-5 days a week, dishwasher almost every day, run a fridge, induction hob, electric oven, microwave, robot mop, smart bulbs, router etc, 2 laptops, 3 desktops, electric blanket, hoover, air purifiers, phones with induction plates, on and one, so plenty of stuff plugged in. I don't have a tv or a car. My electricity bill from Octopus is about fifty pounds a month. 3 bed.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 16/09/2026 22:35

Just realised that £190 is my total bill, not just for electric. Our gas hasn't been on for months, other than to heat water and of course the daily standing charge 😬. So most of it is for electricity, sigh...
