Who on earth is buying their kids catapults?

I’ve already had an animal abuse story go poof today so I’m not sure if this one will hang around for long, but who in the world is buying their kid’s catapults and if you’ve bought your child a catapult what pro social activity do you think they are doing with them?

i get posts from all the local residents groups and the kids are using them to shoot road signs but also to target local wildlife. I also don’t understand why parents are buying their kids electric scooters and e-bikes and i suppose it’s the same kind of mindset.

Idiots and stupid parents. 🙄

SeptemberRains · 15/09/2026 16:19

The photos of the dead and injured birds and animals are awful. I find the dead swans particularly upsetting.

SharkyBait · 15/09/2026 16:25

The number of terrible/stupid/negligent/irresponsible parents is shocking. It never ceases to amaze me how awful so many parents are these days (or maybe it’s always been this way?) and reading the article yesterday about all those poor animals severely injured or killed because of these nasty cruel little scrotes makes me so angry.

ShitHoleDweller · 15/09/2026 16:29

It’s only a matter of time before they miss and hit a little kid with whatever they’re using as a missile. Its just mindless violence and cruelty.

I'm not sure modes of transport and weapons are quite the same thing. My children have neither, but my reasons for those choices are quite different in each case.

As for catapults, they always feature heavily in depictions of children in the olden days eg the Beano and Just William, which generally speaking are spoken of fondly by the "parents these days" crowd.

Bunnybigears · 15/09/2026 16:51

They will pretend they are for fishing. The same way they pretend that the electric scooters they buy are only used on private property and the balaclava their kids wear is to keep the innocent little faces warm.

BlusteryLake · 15/09/2026 16:56

Because plenty of bad parents are utterly blind to what awful little scrotes their children are, and will defend them to their last breath.

I used to read the Beano and I’m pretty sure that Dennis the Menace was also up to nefarious shit with those things, hence his name.

They are catapulting the fish?! I’ve never heard that’s a thing.

It’s one thing to defend them but actually different thing to arm them!!!

Or they know they have one but don't take it off them because they're just " being kids"🙄

Or they need the balaclava because the police "pick on them". Yes, for committing crimes and antisocial behaviour!!

Catapults are used to catapult fishing bait into the water, not to catapult the fish.

I go fishing with my dh a lot and they’re a thing eta, but I doubt that’s what most of the kids being bought them are doing with them. They’d be carrying a rod and other equipment if so.

ShitHoleDweller · 15/09/2026 17:04

Theyve found another use for them, to blast the ball bearings through people’s car windows. Precious little darlings.

My neighbour was hit by a ball bearing from a catapult when he was in his garden. Feral children goaded on by their feral parents. So many e-scooters and e-bikes around. Kids with no helmets and sometimes a toddler on the bike with them. It’s like dystopian nightmare with civilisation collapsing. So many recent balloon releases near where I live.

I suspect kids used to kill animals with them sometimes as well. Not all the kids with catapults obviously but some would have. I think it would have been seen as less of an issue than now though. Which is good.

ShitHoleDweller · 15/09/2026 17:45

If we’re going back in time they might have killed something that the mother might have cooked, but we’re in different times now.

All I'm saying is that the presence of catapults doesn't of itself prove that parenting has undergone massive decline in this generation, still less the presence of e-bikes which can be legitimate modes of transport. E-scooters are currently illegal but under review.

Natsku · 15/09/2026 18:00

My DD made a slingshot (which is I assume what you mean, rather than the mediaeval weapon!) in scouts, which rather surprised me. She never used it though, and definitely would never have used it to hurt animals.

Magnificentkitteh · 15/09/2026 18:01

That reminds me, one scout camp I volunteered at had a slingshot shooting range, like you'd get at a fairground but with catapults.

Longleaf · 15/09/2026 18:26

We used catapults to knock down tin cans when I was a child. We made them ourselves.

The only children I'm aware of using them round here now are from the Traveller site. I'm not sure if they they're homemade or not.
