Favourites of my DD when she was 12:
Princess Diaries
Sound of Music - the queen of Genovia when she was just a nanny ...

Top Gun II - it's very anodyne, so boring really (actually rated PG-13 but why?)
Top Gun - rated PG (12+) Just the opening sequence on the deck of the aircraft carrier - that's incredible cinematography. Be prepared for sobbing when Goose dies ...

Jurassic Park - my sheltered 12yr old did not find this frightening

I am 38 and Sound of Music and Princess Diaries are still my favourites 😁

Racing Stripes

Parent trap!
50 first dates? Not sure if that age-appropriate but it is a good watch

Also came to recommend Parent Trap!

My 12 year old was bored by Clueless, I think it was just too dated for her. Similar films she loved, 13 Going on 30, any Lindsay Lohan movie, Never Been Kissed, Enchanted, 50 First Dates and the Wedding Singer.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is on her list to watch but I can’t remember if there’s anything inappropriate in that, I don’t think so and Music and Lyrics which is cheesy but I love the music video.

School of Rock

Yes! This too is a favourite.

Miss Congeniality
Legally blonde - not seen the new series Elle on Amazon, but might be good

Iocanepowder · 12/09/2026 20:00

Also hear me out:

Monsters Inc
Scream

Latitudeohyeah · 12/09/2026 20:01

We like all the Studio Ghibli movies.❤️

What about a musical?

Hairspray. Great fun, banging tunes, but also subtext with some real issues.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 12/09/2026 20:04

Not quite fitting your theme, but 'Are you there God? It's me, Margaret' is really good.

Proudofitbabe · 12/09/2026 20:08

Mine saw Charlie’s Angels recently and loved it
Coyote Ugly
Bring it On

Shufflebumnessie · 12/09/2026 20:17

Strange Magic
Freaky Friday
Parent Trap
Grease
Stardust

Family Switch & Godmothered are fun Christmas films.

Cool Runnings.

Pitch Perfect.

Came on here to recommend this too.

AnnesPuffedSleeves · 12/09/2026 21:01

17 again with Zac Efron and Matthew Perry. Zac is fab in it.

HollyGolightly4 · 12/09/2026 21:06

Depends how cheesy-

A Cinderella Story!
Moxie on Netflix is a great little one
Angus, thongs and perfect snogging
Stepmom (but only if you want to cry)

MrsToddsShortcut · 12/09/2026 21:16

You are so not invited to my bat mitzvah.

I watched it by accident one day (it was on in the background and got sucked in). It’s a really sweet, funny movie.

UnderThePressure · 12/09/2026 21:21

Coraline, Kiki's Delivery Service, Pitch Perfect, Barbie.

Edited

I was so excited to take my kids to see this and we ended up walking out, it was awful.

Wicked

?!?!?!

No way! What offended you? I thought it was a close adaptation of the book, and the acting was fine.

PurpleThistle7 · 12/09/2026 21:33

Another vote for miss congeniality. My daughter’s favourite alongside legally blonde.

we also have a bit of a tough women theme - hidden figures, Erin brochovich (a couple maybe problematic moments depending on your comfort level), freedom writers (we watched this at 11 but again - depends on what you’re comfortable with…).

my kids both liked the Martian so we’re planning on project Hail Mary the next movie night.

Gonksmum · 12/09/2026 21:36

Little Women, perhaps.

Isn’t it romantic
