Does anyone else find the rain calming?

Since I was a small child I have adored the rain, absolutely loved it.

I have no idea exactly why but it makes me feel so very happy. Since I was young I have suffered from anxiety and for some reason rain never fails to ground me.

I have had a really rough year and summer was particularly tough, the heatwaves left me feeling physically and mentally unwell. Today I have woken up to rain, proper rain not drizzle and I’m feeling so calm and upbeat. I laid in bed for a while hearing it tapping against my bedroom window and I felt so cosy (I usually wake up with high anxiety so this was a treat for me). Weird, I know but I’ve just stood outside in the cool driving rain and felt almost euphoric. I’m hoping to be able to drag the dog out soon on a lovely wet walk around the fields (not sure he’s going to be too impressed though).

Autumn is my favourite month and I hope there will be many more rainy days to come.

I agreed, there are so many areas of the world desperately needing rain. Global warming is very frightening, this summer has proven that 😞

I love running in the rain, it makes me feel alive. And yes, I am aware how wanky that sounds.

Me too. I'm sure I have summer SAD, I've felt uptight and anxious all summer and only now coming down from it, the more of this weather the better imo.

There are videos of forests in the rain on youtube, just because so many of us love the rain, go knock yourself out OP 😀

I am grateful for it. The trees and crops need it.

I go to sleep every night listening to rain sounds on the Calm app. I had awful perimenopausal sleepless nights before that.

It's not so great when you have a leaking roof. Or when you are soaked and stuck in a tent. Or it is relentless for weeks or months on end. But I do find it that it at least stops the neighbours going outside, and that in itself is calming. And there's also the clean air. A soft pitter-patter when you are in the safety of a dry space is nice. White noise can be calming.

My father travelled a lot when I was small. When home he would park his car outside my bedroom window (we lived in a bungalow) and when I could hear rain pattering on the roof of his car I felt doubly safe. I always recall that now in heavy rain.

We have a touring caravan and it's absolute when it's raining and I'm snuggled on the sofa with a book - wonderful, isn't it?

I don't mind it but I think OP you must never have lived anywhere with a leaky roof to feel that way about rain!

I like spending time outdoors and I really don't mind walking the dog in the rain. Boyfriend always used to moan about it but the raincoat I bought him for his birthday is hopefully going to change that.

Oh I have and been in tents in the pouring rain and worked in it too. I don't think anything would make me hate the rain.

It depends what you're doing and where you are. If you're warm, dry and can listen to it or watch it from a place of comfort then absolutely. If for example you're driving on the M1 with surface spray and limited visibility, or you're working outside in the cold with horizontal rain coming at you then no.

I never used to mind the rain until I moved into this house. Bad storm a few days after moving and we had water coming in three different places. That was two years ago and I still feel anxious when heavy rain starts - I close the curtains and put earphones in to block it out. I know, I need help of sone kind!

I love the rain too, I always sleep much better when it's raining and I can listen to it as I drift off.

I remember we took our young DC on holiday to Spain and we were staying in a villa on the outskirts of a town. We had the most amazing downpour of rain along with a storm, I've never seen or heard anything like it and I'll always remember sitting outside with the kids on the terrace just listening for ages. It's a very soothing sound.

Dog walks in it? Less enticing

I've just come back from a dog walk in the pouring rain. I got quite wet and came back buzzing and invigorated (yes, I'm strange). Dog not too happy though!

You came back to a warm, dry place - and presumably wore clothes and shoes that kept you somewhat dry. If you didn't, then get thee to an outdoor gear shop!

I don't think you're strange - you just walked your dog in the rain in mild weather and went home to dry off, as many of us do each day.

I listen to rainfall through my snoozeband, it stops my brain from booting up in the middle of the night.

I find the same thing, if I listen to rain sounds to sleep then I'll sleep right through.

I’m absolutely loving it today. I am half-heartedly working upstairs and have both office windows open as wide as they’ll go. Enjoying the sounds of the gentle rain and the petrichor.

I went for a run in the rain this morning and it was the most enjoyable run I’ve done for about 5 months.

I'm a summer person and have been in my element this year. But yes, I do like the rain too. I like hearing it on my window when I'm in bed, I like the tingly feeling of it on my skin and I love a walk along a stormy, deserted beach. I get it, I really do. It's just that when it starts raining in this country it goes on and on and bloody on.
