Is a Costco membership worth it?

i just found out the company I work for is on the pre-approved membership list, meaning I can get a Costco membership! I’ve been dying to go forever but could never figure out how to get in, but now I can!

Is it really worth it? What should we buy? What’s essential? The nearest one is an hour away so a trip out there needs to be worth it 🤣

I hate the store and haven’t been in for years but the fuel is the cheapest in the city here

Saving on fuel for us makes it worth it. We bulk buy toilet rolls and kitchen roll and sauces. Its good for cakes and books as well

even in bulk I find it’s more expensive than, or about the same as, supermarket own brands (do a lot of pricing for scout group) but it’s convenient and for us the fuel is worth the membership.

It’s helpful if you have the space to store stuff when they’re on offer. There are quite a few branded things we only buy when Costco have them on offer, but we have a big family and we have loads of storage space.

Regular buys for us are -
Toilet rolls
kitchen roll
Washing powder
dishwasher tablets
Diluting juice
fizzy juice (only works if you won’t drink it twice as quick!)
Cheese
yoghurts
milk
cereal
Chopped tomatoes
Beans
olive oil
herbs/spices
Wraps
pancakes
Crisps
Shampoo & Conditioner
Shower gel
Deodorants
tampons
Tin foil
Cling film

We also do tyres, two of us get our glasses and I always get my sketchers there.

Queues were bad last time DH and I went , don't know why they changed the old queuing system .

Also in the car park it used to be one way so you had the whole width of the road , now it's a free for all .
Parking spaces are huge though and the trolleys are brilliant so that's a bonus 😃

Bananacrepewithnuts · 07/09/2026 22:33

I have a membership but don't think I'll renew.
I don't think you get the bargains in there now that you used to.
Their food is really nice but you have to buy in such bulk that it's not for everyone.
Also in the run up to Xmas now it's going to be so packed it puts me off going.

Love their cakes though!

We live down the road from one so it’s just easy, and for petrol. Pop in every couple of months.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/09/2026 22:50

I mainly use for petrol although always pop in and get a few things. Great for when friends come over!

Gengha · 07/09/2026 22:53

I used to go mainly for coffee and bin bags but they don’t do the bin bags I like any more. They are brilliant for electronics their customer service is great. I haven’t renewed my membership for a couple of
years.

Randomness26 · 07/09/2026 23:23

No but I don't pay for my membership my company does so it's no big loss for me. It's local to me 10 min drive so i often go for a wander about and pick up the odd thing . Xmas is good for lego sets
