Stomach pain after Costa coffee

Bought a takeaway coffee from Costa in Wimbledon today - first time in ages. I am still suffering the consequences with a griping stomach pain which started shortly after and has been going on now for 8 hours Anyone else had this? It's put me off getting coffees again, which are more expensive now anyway...

It is more likely to be the caffeine intake over the milk jugs. Costa and Starbucks use different beans and there’s around 4 times more caffeine in Costa beans than there is in Starbucks beans

Yes, why i dont touch Statbucks with a barge pole. Overroasted beans, but weak. Worst of all worlds.

I think all these very large sugary, milky coffee drinks are too much for most of us.

I am pretty senstive to milk, caffeine and sugar so generally only drink herbal or green tea (with the exception of one mug of "priper" tea with milk at breakfast).

I can tolerate coffee in small amounts - like the very small coffees you get for a couple of euors in France or Spain. Any more and it is bad news for my stomach.

Last year waiting for a train on a hot day I made a very uncharacteristic decision to order black iced coffee. It was huge. I drank it all as I was thirstt. The rest of the day I had awful stomach cramps and loose bowels.

I sometimes get this. I drink decaf latte and it doesn’t matter where I get it from. Think it’s the milk for me but I can’t stand oat milk.

At the risk of sounding repetitive 😊

if it’s lower abdo/cramping pain, it’s most likely the caffeine has stimulated your guts! depending on your normal situation, you might experience some diarrhoea

if it’s upper abdo/aching/gassy, it’s probably the milk

as already mentioned, costa staff are trained not to rinse milk jugs between use. If there’s any milk left from the previous use, it’s not even tipped out, they just top up with fresh milk and steam again - I can’t imagine what that jug looks like by the end of the day Envy

hope you feel better soon

Over roasting doesn’t change the caffeine content. Over roasting does change the quality and the taste of the beans, which is why Starbucks taste so weak

I’ve had investigations for stomach pain this year: thankfully nothing sinister found and the “probably IBS” diagnosis given.

During all this I realised that the pain symptoms began shortly after we bought a bean to cup coffee machine, and I was making every cup with 2 shots.

Totally eliminated coffee from my diet for a couple of months and all symptoms have greatly reduced, including other longstanding ones I’ve had for years and assumed were just “how I am”.

So to my great regret it looks like coffee could well be the culprit. It’s not caffeine, because I switched to decaf which made no difference.

Thanks for all your info and advice. On reflection I did notice the latte looked stronger than I have had in the past. My upper GI cramps were much reduced this morning but I don't think I shall be repeating this experience.. ! About 10 years ago I used to drink lots of lattes with one shot, maybe they are stronger now?

Costa coffee is as rough as hell. I can't stomach it either (nausea). It doesn't taste good. I think they're using the sweepings up.

climbintheback · 08/09/2026 18:47

No silly

climbintheback · 08/09/2026 18:49

I had terrible stomach gripes after eating my home grown apples - can I sue myself?

Greyover · 08/09/2026 18:59

Eh? No-one has suggested she sues Costa Confused

QueenStevie · 08/09/2026 20:15

I can get this along with nausea after cafe coffees so I stick to decaf now.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 08/09/2026 20:20

And this is why I shit after having a coffee. I dont drink it as a rule, one maybe every year or two.
I actually didn't know this was a thing

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/09/2026 20:24

I always feel.queasy after a Costa. No problems with other coffee chains.
