I’ve cocked up on uniform

DD going into Y7. There was a uniform sale at the school in early July. A letter was sent out a couple of weeks later at the end of term stating they had reduced the compulsory items to three with a link to school uniform policy. A couple of days later I went onto the school uniform page on the school website - it seems some things had been updated on there such as pullovers for the school day or leggings for PE being optional, but needing to be purchased from the school supplier if wanted. Some other compulsory items (such as PE top and shorts) had to adhere to a very specific specification, which wouldn’t really be available outside of the school supplier, but weren’t mandated to be from school supplier. I thought we’d been organised and all we had left to buy was a coat and bag. When I cross checked everything with the uniform list, I’d made a small stupid error by just buying long white socks as that’s what’s shown in the uniform picture, rather than cross checking the uniform page. We were away in England so that was easy enough to sort. We are back now and getting uniforms ready for school. I’ve gone onto the school website and have the wrong stuff for PE. The uniform listed on the school website uniform policy document is different to what’s listed on the website’s uniform document. I’ve been trekking to different supermarkets today and there’s nothing left.

Contact the school and explain. This is partially their fault by not making it crystal clear what the requirement is.
You can then get the relevant items asap, but your child shouldn't be sanctioned for an error that would have been avoided if the website/uniform list were the same.

Socks I can sort. It’s PE kit.

You could answer some of the questions to see if anyone can help?

Still need to be more specific, you’ve got branded and it’s now non branded or what? Lots of kids will still have the older version especially if they told you about a uniform sale.

VanillaIceIceBaby · 31/08/2026 21:42

I agree with @Jeska7. Phone the school in the morning to clarify and see if your child can wear the ‘old’ kit. If they can, there will be others doing the same.

Post on here what you need if it’s not school branded so people can help you look.

Don’t rely on their being no PE.

Smartiepants79 · 31/08/2026 21:47

What’s wrong with the PE kit you’ve bought? If it’s just and old style that has been replaced this year then there shouldn’t be an issue. Plenty of kids will still be wearing the old one..

PleaseDontAsk · 31/08/2026 21:51

How hard can it be to source below the knees socks. Hardly think anyone would notice if she wore the other ones.

You've bought clothes from the schools shop in the sale- she can just wear them.It sounds like a them problem

I hardly think this is worth the agro you're giving it

Bitzee · 31/08/2026 21:52

Are you saying that the school used to have branded PE kit but has now switched to generic as per the new regulations on the number of branded items? And you already bought the old style? If yes you’ll be fine, loads of the older kids will be in the old stuff until outgrown and I bet so will lots of Y7s with older siblings as they’ll have hand me downs. As for over/under knee socks just pull them down or fold them over as required.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 31/08/2026 22:08

The school effectively have 2 uniform lists and they're different, is that the issue?

Stick with what you've got, take screenshots as evidence, and if they tell you it's wrong tell them you bought as per the information on the website.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/08/2026 22:10

Email. Ask for clarification as there are two sets of criteria and you don't want her to get into trouble.

VanillaIceIceBaby · 31/08/2026 22:22

If it’s generic you can order on Next before midnight and get it tomorrow.

But I think what you have already will be fine.

Hayley1256 · 31/08/2026 22:57

So you've bought PE kit from the second hand sale but now it's not the right OE kit because they've changed it? I would just check with th school for when it's open and sort it out then

Schoolchoicesucks · 31/08/2026 23:29

If you bought PE kit from a 2nd hand sale that the school organised for new Y7 parents then it's probably fine and they'll be running the old uniform on for kids who have the old stuff handed down from older siblings/bought 2nd hand in parallel with the new stuff.

What items do you think you need that you can't find? Can your DC just go in with best match you have and see how it goes?

TheBirdintheCave · 31/08/2026 23:54

I bought all of my son’s things earlier in the summer and just last week the school decided that, actually, the kids could just wear polo if they wanted (which son already had for PE) rather than the new shirts that I’d already washed and ironed. I was, and still am, pretty peeved.

Rigbyp · 03/09/2026 11:33

The uniform sale was for all years, not organised specifically for year 7. Another parent has kindly lent us a set and I’ll be able to give them back a set from the school shop on Saturday when they’ll have them in. It wasn’t as bad as the mail the school then sent out the day before children were due to start saying they were meant to start a day earlier! Pupils were also asked to get to school in good time and no later than 8.10 to ensure they could line up in the playground. They referred to considerate parking for those travelling by car, respecting neighbours etc, not causing congestion (fair enough). Apparently the road in front was chocca with hundreds of kids as they then didn’t open the gates until 8.10. I think the merry dances from this school will continue, along with their overzealous expectations, so I should chill out a bit and keep my fingers crossed that they have as much passion for teaching as they do for endless compliance.

Thanks all for your help.

This is the school's cockup, not yours. But your DC is going to be the one possibly worrying and getting upset about having different kit to others.

I would email the school pointing out they have different kit on the two different uniform pages. Then write your DC a note to show her form tutor and PE teacher. explaining the issue.

Good luck for first day!

Whoever is organising all this at the school is doing a seriously crap job!

Rigbyp · 04/09/2026 17:58

I was relieved last night that we’d borrowed one as the timetable showed she needed PE kit today! The form tutor didn’t say that she’d be doing induction activities with them today instead, so she then ended up not needing it, but just carrying it around instead. She’s doing good so far though.
