I’m a mosquito magnet! Help!

I’m getting eaten alive this year by mosquitoes particularly IN MY OWN HOUSE!! I’ve got fans on, a blue light thingy and spray myself with lemon oil and they still get me during the night! I’ve tried the bracelets they didn’t work!
I’m going on holiday in a few weeks and am worried I’m going to be a feast!
I never used to have this problem it only started a couple of years ago and I’m convinced it’s down to the HRT!
spam me with your tips and tricks!

Vitamin B1 from Holland and Barrett. Think it has thiamine in it and actually does work

Sorry, but this advice is quite useless for mosquito magnets.

@Mydietstartstomorrow you need proper insect repellents containing deet, Picaridin/Icaridin, IR3535 or PMD.

Insect repellents to avoid (according to Which?) are citronella spray and bracelets.

There is no scientific evidence to support any of the woo suggestions on here, and if you really are a walking mosquito buffet you need to cover every bit of exposed skin with proper insect repellent containing one of the aforementioned ingredients.

I know there is little science behind it, but I am a mossie magnet and it’s worked miracles for me! And the OP asked for tips and tricks not NICE guidelines, I simply shared my experience.

I’m A negative and I get eaten.

I’ve tried everything and honestly only Deet or Picaridin works for me. If the mosquitoes are bad, I even get bitten when I use repellent. I hate the bastard things, as the bites swell up and I can’t sleep.

In Spain one year, the pharmacist sold me a 2% hydrocortisone cream. That really helped.

Me too. I actually almost convinced myself I have bedbugs (I don't, checked everything for hours with a magnifying glass) because the mosquito bites are so bad. Do you know your blood type? I'm convinced it's linked to that.

the only thing I've found that helps is sleeping with my same blood type but younger and sweeter 5 year old in the same room 😂 but that's not really fair on him.

I’m o neg but why would I now be bitten so bad in my 50’s when my blood was probably juicier in my 20’s and 30’s?! 😅

I’ve had the opposite experience: I’m a former mozzie magnet who’s now much less bothered!
I go to a damp, mozzie-infested place in Mallorca every year so I have plenty experience and can see a change.

Ive been taking high levels of vits B (all of them) and D in recent years. I’m sure that must be it.
I did read somewhere that people who live in sunny, mosquito infested places are not that bothered by them because they get a lot of Vitamin D from the sun.

If anyone does want to go down the vitamin repellent route it’s not an instant effect; it takes a few months to be effective.

Banana skins! Peel a banana and rub the inside of the skins over the bites. This gives almost immediate relief - not completely but about 85%, enough to get it down to bearable.

Smudge all over and roll on deet max strength around ankles and shoulders as a minimum here.

Add in socks and long sleeves for the evenings.

And a decent antihistamine every day. Plus the hot spoon method if I do get bitten.

What is the hot spoon method?

I always get bitten to smithereens when away, none of the rest of my family do, no idea why they get me. I’ve heard type O blood types are more susceptible but I’m AB, also being overweight or exercise a lot, therefore producing more CO2 but they don’t apply to me either.

Anyway, last time I was away I used those bracelets which seemed to work, so took them this time and got bitten a LOT even with one one each wrist and each ankle. I had some corkers, including a MASSIVE one of my calf, which was so swollen and painful that every time I stood up and the blood rushed to my legs its hurt to walk on it.

Ended up getting some spray from the local supermarket (Menorca, so a presumably Spanish brand called Zum Zum) and just continuously sprayed myself with that of an evening and that seemed to do the trick.

And to tackle the existing bites, I took 2 antihistamines each night before bed and where I would usually get all infected and pussy for weeks , they cleared up completely by the end of the week.

The spray does stink though so I have been researching mosquito repellent perfumes if anyone has any experience of these that they can recommend?

Interesting to read about marmite. Might take some next time I go away. Although when I was a child i lived in a mosquito prone area and got bitten a lot despite being a big marmite fan. Luckily don’t seem to get any mozzies where I live now so it is confined to holidays.

Taking high doses of B vitamins can cause serious side effects, like nerve damage.
