Feel like my life is a sham

ShamLife · 29/08/2026 00:38

Name changed for this. Feeling really low and just need some support. I’ll try to keep it brief.

I’m late 40s, DH is early 50s. We have been married for over 20 years and have 1 teenage DD.

We live about 4-5 hours away from his family (he moved away for uni and never went back). I am not hugely close with my family, who live about an hour away and dote on DD but tend to forget about me. As is often the case, there’s a fair bit of history. There was a bit of a family tragedy when I was a toddler and my mum, for reasons beyond her control, effectively withdrew from me completely. My dad has always been there, but I think this had a massive influence on me, and I grew up incredibly independent. As in was living independently by 16 and lived alone until meeting DH at 24.

I’m now one of the late diagnosed ADHD women you see reels about, that need nobody and struggle to trust. I’ve spent most of my adult life feeling like an imposter. I know it’s made me incredibly hard to live with, and both DH and DD have also been diagnosed ND too.

DH and I haven’t been speaking to each other for the best part of a week. He believes I am being completely unreasonable in reacting to him agreeing to do something pretty massive for his parents without any discussion with me (they have never done anything supportive for us - I have practically nothing to do with them). I found out only when I tried to pay DD’s hairdresser by bank transfer and got a message that £30k had been paid out to his parents and we’d hit the daily cap on bank transfers for the day.

Now, there are a couple of things in the past that are quite triggering for me that relate to his parents. Firstly was our wedding: they donated nothing but made demands about guest lists. His family is about 6 times the size of mine so we set a rule that if we hadn’t seen anyone in the past 2 years on either side, they were either invited to the evening do or not at all. Of course, the distance meant many wouldn’t come to the evening do, but even some relatives of his that live about 40 mins away declined. I didn’t think much of it, and on the day thought it a bit odd that his parents literally ignored me all day (they didn’t say a single word to me) but pushed it to the back of my mind. We partied till about 1am and then went to our hotel about 30 mins from our wedding venue. At 8am PIL turned up and reception rang (waking us up) to tell us they were there to collect DH and take him to visit these semi-local relatives. Pretty unbelievable, but DH went. He chose to leave me alone for several hours rather than say no to them.

I was obviously anxious about this for some time, and I took years making sure he would have my back if we had children (he was desperate for children). Throughout the pregnancy he was amazing and would be telling his parents very clearly that we didn’t know how the first few days would be so they would need to stay in a hotel when she arrived, which they were in agreement with. They agreed not to book until she had arrived safely, which was just as well as I ended up going 2 weeks over and having to have a c-section. I had a lot of complications afterwards as I have a blood clotting disorder which required daily injections, and I developed infections and all sorts in that first week. DH was calling his parents to tell them they could come and meet their first grandchild, and they refused if they couldn’t stay with us. Again, DH put them first and pressured me to have them visit, “only for a week or so”. I stayed firm and out of spite they visited for the day. They drove 5 hours each way rather than fork out for a Travelodge down the road. (They were not badly off by any stretch of the imagination.). They also brought an enormous (hideous) nappy cake with them, despite knowing we were using reusable nappies.

They have made it very clear that they have no interest in DD or me, which is fine usually as DH just deals with them himself and visits a couple of times a year.

Fast forward to this week and £35k has been sent to them. When I ask what is going on he tells me that they really need a new car (they’re both pushing 80 and may have to stop driving within months) but couldn’t get finance. They couldn’t pay outright because they have cashed in their shares and given their savings to BIL who is renovating a house and not working at the moment. They really like this £35k car but don’t want to get a loan. They didn’t even ask DH, he just offered them the money and then sent it with zero discussion. No consideration of the impact on me or DD (we are desperate for new windows and she will be taking her driving test in a month or two and £10k was put away for a car for her). He hasn’t suggested to them that we will need the money back, and didn’t think it was something he needed to discuss with me - his wife of 20+ years. He admitted that he knew I would say no, and also that they are leaving their house etc to him and his brother equally, so it will never be rebalanced, but he couldn’t care less.

I am so annoyed with him, but I’m also just deeply sad that nobody has ever truly had my back. I’ve never been the most important person to anyone, not even my husband of 2+ decades. And the armour that I fight daily not to wear, not to be too independent, not to be “hard”’and unfeeling, has a purpose. Because there is nobody else that will fight for me or even respect me as a person when they are deciding to give money I’ve saved as well to people that have shown me nothing but contempt. I feel so alone. DD is away for a few days, most of my friends and colleagues are away and I face a long weekend with someone who clearly doesn’t care and who won’t even acknowledge me if our paths cross in my own home. I’ve been in bed in pitch darkness for hours and I can hear him playing video games downstairs.

I don’t know what I wanted from this post. I feel no better for writing it down. I’m so sad and lonely and just feel so detached from my own life. :(

Good morning. I did manage to get some sleep but still woke up feeling sad. Thank you for all of the replies. I’ll try and answer some of the questions.

I actually don’t care about the money. We both work hard and earn well, so that could be replaced (just not in time to get DD a car before her driving test). He will no doubt be expecting to get the car on finance and not care that we are paying interest so that his parents don’t have to.

They live 5 hours away and I’m not going to spend 10 hours travelling to rant at them. It’s actually not them I’m mad at: DH could and should have consulted me whatever the amount. It’s the disrespect from him that is currently my number one issue, both in the original action of sending the money but also the ongoing cold shoulder.

I haven’t had PILs’ phone numbers for years. I want nothing to do with them and have distanced myself completely.

I have probably spent the best part of a decade in therapy since my teenage years. And at least 5 years at various times with DH, pre and post ND diagnoses. I take meds (ADHD and HRT) to help me with focus at work but there are no meds that do anything to a stubborn middle aged ASD man who has felt guilty for going to uni and doing well for all of his adult life.

I actually have a considerable amount of money in my name, it’s just locked away in the house and bonds etc that don’t mature until I’m older. And pensions. I often joke to DH that he needs to be nice to me if he doesn’t want to have to work until he dies.

Yes, DD will be an adult soon enough, and she’s a clever girl, but has some emotional delays because of her ND and may take a little longer than her peers to be ready to live independently. She might surprise me, but I imagine she will choose a local university and stay at home rather than seek freedom at 18. Like me, her bedroom is her nest and her safe place and I won’t take that from her while she is still becoming independent.

Sorry to drip feed, but when he met me I didn't tell him that I had quite a lot of debt. I owned my own house and was doing well at work and obviously wanted him to think I had everything under control. He found out when we failed a credit check for a mortgage on a joint home together after we were married. We did manage to get a mortgage, but at a much higher interest rate initially, and he gave me the money to clear the debts and get a better mortgage rate a couple of years later. So money has always been a challenge between us. I am better now at noticing when I am dopamine chasing with new things but he has from time to time found credit card statements etc with higher balances than zero (manageable nonetheless) which is triggering for him and then sends me into a spiral of self-hate. I fully expect that any mention of this being about sending money will trigger comments about my track record not being unblemished.

The money definitely went to the PIL and has gone on a car. They were probably in the showroom when they asked him.

the crux is that a large sum of family money was removed from a bank account without family discussion. this is not acceptable.

he will now be in the position that hes wanted to look cool to his dad, oh yes dad i have plenty money i can loan you it no worries, but he was too busy showing off to think about the implications.

i can only assume that mr showoff thinks he will get the money back. i do not think he ever will. he has therefore deprived the household of this money.

id be wanting at the very least for him to draw up loan papers so if they don’t pay back i’d have a hope of gettimg it on their death, but i imagine mr showoff would not want to do this.

for me this would be a line in the sand.

did he put £35k more than you into the relationship? is that how hes justifying it, thats us even type thing. in which case i’d understand it a tiny little bit. it’s still wrong though.

but failing that it’s just not possible for me to understand on what planet this is ok.

do you have another £35k in the bank? if so i’d move it to somewhere else and consider it mine, just like he considered the £35k his.

and i’d be thinking seriously about if i wanted to remain with him. you must be devastated at his arseholery.

Sp00nbillS0ng · 29/08/2026 09:41

I cannot believe that there was no discussion together before removal of the money

Your DH has no respect for you

I agree, open your own bank account today

BTW
Nobody needs a 35k car !
I have been driving an old car, which cost 1.5k for the last 5+ years & it has more years in it

Are you sure he didn’t give them 35k to then receive it back in inheritance that will not be shared in a divorce?

Sp00nbillS0ng · 29/08/2026 09:49

I would suggest

If there is money left in the joint account to take it out & put it in a bank account in your name or your daughters name.

OneNewEagle · 29/08/2026 09:54

spend part of the weekend sorting out a new savings account that’s just in your name and bank account. From now on you just transfer your share of bills to the joint account each month.

I’ve spent a lifetime feeling alone too so I get it op. You are forced to be independent and distant as it’s the only way to survive.

also this weekend do not speak to him, I’d probably not speak to him again if he took money like that from me. Do something nice for yourself, potter around a bit and maybe pop out.

focus on just you and your DD from now on, I think she is the one person you have. I have an adult DS he is my one person too. I have a DP of over 20years but it’s not that great anymore as things I need don’t happen, I’m not sure they ever did I just didn’t voice my needs before as so independent after being a lone parent.

Justbrieme · 29/08/2026 09:55

Honestly @ShamLife his behaviour towards you is absolutely appalling.

My DH is on the spectrum and he was a real project early on because he did not get some of this type of stuff especially given he grew up in a very toxic home but he has worked on it over the years.

Your DH needs to either show a commitment to take some responsibility in his marriage or you should seriously consider getting your ducks in a row. He is incredibly self focussed and immature that he did not realise that money was belonging to you both and big decisions need to be taken jointly in a marriage.

Pickledonion1999 · 29/08/2026 10:10

Sorry op he has behaved really badly if these were joint savings and assuming you aren't absolutely loaded and 35k is a drop in the ocean.
He needs to ask for it back.
No 80 y+ year olds need a 35k car.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 29/08/2026 10:13

That would be deal breaker for me. Why do 2 80 year olds need a 35k car?? How dare he just give them
all that money without asking?? I’d have kicked him out and told him to go and stay with them if they’re that important. I think you’re undereacting if im
honest!

RVectensian · 29/08/2026 10:17

All the back story was neither here nor there to me. I couldn't get het up about a nappy cake nor him going to visit relatives the day after the wedding.

Him sending what is presumably joint money is a big deal.

The rest reads rather like self indulgent histrionics tbh.

Happyjoe · 29/08/2026 10:24

Your husband is disrespectful. Giving the money without discussion and now the not talking to you/telling you that you have overreacted.

You've every right to be pissed off, I would be too. You have a husband problem and none of this is on you. Sorry OP.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 29/08/2026 03:19

Also, the turning up at 8am after your wedding is MAD. Your DH needs serious therapy for allowing shit like that.

How dare they do that. I'd have been livid. Treating her husband like a child.

WearyAuldWumman · 29/08/2026 10:32

DecisionTime123 · 29/08/2026 00:43

Couldn't read and run. How on earth can you write off £30+k like that? If that was joint money then he's basically stolen it from you? So no car etc for your DD either? I'd say there's no coming back from this. Hopefully others will be along soon with some advice but I think you need to get very angry very quickly.

Many years ago, I lived in a bedsit in Glasgow. The other two bedsits in the flat were occupied by married couples.

I got home one day and one of the wives was distraught. She worked in a jeweller's; her husband was a waiter. (His family was one of those expelled from Uganda by Amin and he'd come to Scotland without proof of his qualifications, etc so took whatever jobs he could find.)

They had just bought their first (second-hand) car. Her BIL had appeared unexpectedly and had seen the car. "Mum needs a car."

Her husband had simply handed over the keys.

For me this is divorce territory. So:

  1. Gather all the information you can about the family finances, especially his and both your pension details.
  2. Put a stop to all joint bank accounts and any joint credit cards. Ensure all expenditure from these requires both parties to sign.
  3. Get the house valued.
  4. Once you have all your financial information together and your original marriage certificate arrange a free interview with a family law solicitor.
  5. Your starting point should be half of everything and yes, the missing £35k will have to be accounted for.
Save your money for therapy after the divorce and financial settlement. I’m sorry OP but there really would be no coming back for me from this. Best of luck 💐
Sp00nbillS0ng · 29/08/2026 10:35

I would be contemplating divorce

Get your ducks into a row

They are 5 hours away, I travel for work and DD is not fully independent (back to school on Tuesday). Much as I considered this, practicalities dictate otherwise.

The money won’t come back. It’s been spent.

It isn’t about the money. It’s the continued stomping over me to placate his parents.

We only have a joint account for bills and a joint account for savings. We both transfer into them but have our own accounts as well. I am not reliant on him for money, but my assets are tied up and tricky to liquidate at this time.

The combination of

Giving the money with no discussion

Him not speaking for days afterwards

This double deceit is unforgivable

Change the password on the wifi so he cannot game

Do not sleak to him

Norugratsatall · 29/08/2026 10:49

Ah OP I’m sorry to read this. You do sound sad. Posters are focussing on the money for the car but I suspect it’s the deeper issues with self worth that are consuming you right now. You mentioned your dad, are you able to contact him or go and see him for the bh weekend? Alternatively, a close friend? Maybe take yourself off and have coffee and cake and visit a museum to do something nice for you and get out of the house and clear your head a bit.

Longer term, once your DD is settled at uni, I would think about leaving this relationship. It seems to have caused you nothing but pain. So maybe start quietly getting your ducks in a row…..

Thinking of you and sending you unmumsnetty hugs. 💐x

Thank you. My close friends are all away and one buried her mum this week. I don’t want to burden them when they are grieving.

I spend a lot of time on my own in restaurants and coffee shops when working away so that’s not really the treat it would be for others. I will find something productive to do this weekend before DD comes home tomorrow night.

It’s chucking it down so maybe I’ll sort out the garage. I’ll have to move all of DH’s things that are in the way onto the drive to make space though……. Might take me hours to reorganise the screw and nail organiser. And number the inventory of (thousands of) rawlplugs……

Wow - so, you're paying for your BIL's lack of funds, it seems. After a marriage full of this nonsense, I'd be seriously thinking about ending it. His parents are toxic and he's a pushover.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 29/08/2026 11:15

OMG. This is terrible that he would gift that much money without a conversation (no matter how much money you have in the bank).

I hope the poster from yesterday reads this - she was peed off about her DH depending £40 on a clothes airer without consultation.

Seriously though you have every right to be upset.
