Has ChatGPT helped you make changes that you would not have changed had you not spoken to it?

Has chatgpt helped you with anything mentally, emotionally, practically?

I spent around five years providing a significant amount of childcare for my daughter. I had my grandchildren three days a week, as well as overnight if she wanted to go out. A lot of the regular childcare was so that she could go to the gym every other day.

The difficulty was that it rarely ended when the babysitting did. She would come back to my house and often stay for hours, bringing whatever drama was happening in her life with her. There always seemed to be some sort of crisis or argument going on. I would have to listen to who had said what to whom, often accompanied by shouting and crying in my home. Sometimes there were genuinely serious issues, but other times relatively minor situations would become enormous dramas.

She would also regularly message me saying that she couldn't cope. As my son got older, there was a period when he spent quite a lot of time with her. I remember receiving very distressed messages from my daughter, only to ask my son what was happening and receive a video seconds later showing her drinking, laughing and listening to music. It became very difficult to know when something was genuinely wrong.

That isn't to say there weren't serious situations. She was rehoused because of domestic violence. A friend subsequently visited her new home, criticised her for having supposedly "jumped the waiting list" to get social housing, and then told her ex-partner where she was living. This resulted in another emergency move. Social services advised my daughter to have no further involvement with this person, yet several months later she invited the same friend into her new home.

So it was a mixture of genuinely serious problems, situations that had been dramatically exaggerated, and sometimes things that simply weren't true.

The effect on me was enormous. After babysitting and spending hours dealing with everything else, I would feel completely drained for days. Because I was providing childcare every other day, I never really had time to recover before it started again. My own home suffered badly and became a mess because I simply didn't have the energy to deal with it. At the time, I didn't fully appreciate how much the situation was affecting every other part of my life.

Eventually I told my daughter that she needed to arrange childcare for the time she spent at the gym. I suggested using a gym with a crèche, including our council-run gym, or using her son's free childcare hours. She didn't want to use the council gym, so I continued helping for a while longer.

The final straw came one day when she was out and repeatedly told me she was on her way back. First she missed the bus, then something else happened, followed by another excuse and another delay. At that point I told her I would no longer provide regular babysitting.

Afterwards, she told other people that I was awful, that I had taken away the only thing she had for herself, and that I never supported her. Some of the things she said about me were quite nasty. She doesn't know that I'm aware of any of this, and I've never confronted her about it.

What surprised me most was the enormous sense of relief afterwards. It felt as though a weight had been lifted. I hadn't realised until then just how much the situation had been affecting me, or how many other areas of my life had suffered as a result.

I haven't cut my daughter off and we still have a relationship. The difference now is that I no longer allow myself to be pulled into every crisis or drama in her life.

It was only when I talked it through properly on chatgpt and explored the situation in much more detail than I have here that my perspective started to change. I began to understand that I didn't need to justify saying no simply because I didn't have somewhere else I needed to be. I also started to recognise the wider impact the situation had been having on me and that it was okay to put a boundary in place.

That took a long time because the guilt was very difficult to get past. If I hadn't had the opportunity to really explore it and look at the situation differently, I honestly think I would probably still be doing it now.

Please note wrote this situation on chatgpt and asked it to rewrite it. So if it screams out chatgpt that's why.

Nope. Sympathy for your situation and it helped you but no.

ChatGPT does have good uses. I think as long as people use it knowing it could give a biased view and don’t fully trust it, then it’s fine. It really helped me in a situation with my SEN child, when I needed help making a complaint.

Firebird83 · Yesterday 21:29

It helped me figure out I’m autistic. I didn’t know until I was 35.

FurForksSake · Yesterday 21:31

It’s helped me fix a skin condition. Which feels bloody ridiculous. But it did. Took an onto of my face, it suggested what was up with it and a solution. Bought the products, skin is fixed.

Worriednanof1 · Yesterday 21:35

It helped me organise an outfit & accessories for my son's wedding. I think it's great. I talk to it all the time.

CarrieOakie · Yesterday 21:38

I used ChatGPT for my interior revamp, I have swapped furniture around, moved books and objects. Spent £30 on new cushion covers and it’s made such a difference

Op your situation was very deep & I’m glad you got the help you needed

i also use Gemini for science/medical stuff & it is extremely helpful. Gives great suggestions on what to ask doctors and which test to ask for next. Far better than ChatGPT

Yes that matters you can ask it the same thing twice and it often gives different answers. And sometimes wrong information.

Helped me write a sensitive eulogy for a funeral. Gave me the bones such that I was capable of personalizing it appropriately.

Helps me gather my thoughts from time to time which is useful,

Helped me construct a response to the legal team regarding a complex probate issue.

I don’t use it often but it’s been helpful. I rather like it. I see it as a tool, not a solution.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · Yesterday 21:41

Yes, massively helped me through bereavement, grief and FOG with my dad. Has helped me through tough parenting moments with my teen. Having an 'intelligent person' to talk things through with as and when the need arises with no fear of judgement, no worry about boring them and no need for social niceties is a bit of a game changer.

MyManinCaracas · Yesterday 21:44

As someone who gets overwhelmed it’s helped me prioritise and focus on the steps I need to take to get something done efficiently. It’s also helped me pinpoint issues I would never have thought of like a recent quote I got from a roofing company.

Oh I don't know anything about genini is it the same as chat gpt?

Yes it was a difficult time that went on for years and a robot comes and changes it. Ffs 🤣

I use it as a second opinion sometimes when I'm indecisive.
Also very handy when working out how certain appliances work as they should when there's no longer a manual.

Disturbia81 · Yesterday 21:52

I love it. It’s given me amazing advice when I was ill and it got everything bang on. It encouraged me to get checked and I did just in time.
It’s given me relationship advice and helped me understand all points of view, this stopped me ruining my relationship.
It’s written a legal letter for me with just a few details.
It’s helped me decide between a few different items to buy.
It’s brilliant. I use Meta on whatsapp

Great that it helped tou with a few different things.

Especially the sensitive funeral eulogy. At a difficult, emotional time 💐

AI hasn’t helped me with emotional stuff but it’s been incredibly useful from a practical point of view. It’s saved me lots of money. I’ve set mine up so that it only gives short, straightforward answers along with an indication as to how certain it is that the information is correct. I’ve also set it up so that it’s not overly enthusiastic or inclined to agree with me. It also provides links so I can fact check if need be.
Yes it can make mistakes but I’ve never had an issue. Having ai means I now give all sorts of things a go. I replaced a faulty multi point lock in a pair of double glazed patio doors this week. I’m quite good at DIY but I don’t think I’d have attempted that without ai. It’s brilliant for plumbing issues and car repairs too.

I think some people think that doing a trade is AI proof but I can’t be the only one who is now tackling far more around my house than before.

Divebar2021 · Yesterday 21:56

I use it pretty regularly. I have a teenager who suffers some anxiety and has refused to go to school in the past and it has given me a strategy to manage that when I wasn’t quite sure what the underlying issue was. I also used it to help me work through some mixed feelings about my retirement from the job. I made reference to that on another thread about AI and someone was so condescending and sneery about it it only hardened my commitment to using it. AI might be inaccurate but it’s never belittled me about my “obvious”’questions.

grinandslothit · Yesterday 21:58

I too have used it to talk through things like this personal things that I don't want to share with other people and it has helped me learn to set boundaries with my adult children which I really needed to do. I didn't want to be the walking doormat forever

It has helped me with insomnia telling me stories to help me fall asleep

Sorry for your loss and difficult time with your dad.

Yes its helped me with things to. It help me write emails to dds school to point out that what they was saying was not compulsory. And a few other things without sounding like a twat.

What i also like is it reads everything it doesn't just take a,few lines and run with it. It doesn't add things you didn't say like on here.

I definitely agree with types of replies on here. I took just under a year break from here because it became to stressful. I was able to explore things. And change things. Get things straight in my head. I didn't have to untangle things.

It also explained to me how people often see through their own lens and can't always see things can be different for different people. Also when talking about a sensitive complex situation and people say it can't possibly be true. Chatgpt told me that the person does that as a form of protection because it's out of their comfort zone and that people get upset if you don't take advice. Because people like to fix thing's and have things neat and tidy.

Sorry i went on a bit there.

No I agree with you. I think people also lose sight of the fact that therapists can get things wrong as well. There are plenty of rubbish ones out there who really don't 'get' your issues. I've seen plenty of them. CGPT is the only thing that has actually got it right for me. Alot of what it says to me 100% resonates and I've felt so much better for it. I don't care what anyone thinks at this point.

Gemini is AI but was developed by a British scientist, I believe and sold to Google

I guess that’s why it’s better at medical and scientific stuff

CarrieOakie · Yesterday 23:14

if you google the founders they all have a science background

Has ChatGPT helped you make changes that you would not have changed had you not spoken to it?
UnintentionalArcher · Yesterday 23:33

@Chattergpt Yes. I used it to talk through a very challenging work situation. I already knew what I needed to do really but I’m the kind of person who needs know they’ve explored all angles and sometimes repeatedly before making big decisions. Sometimes I used it to talk through practical aspects of the situation (e.g. early research into legal aspects before I spoke to actual professionals!). At other times, I used it to verbalise the emotional side when I was struggling. I did talk to my OH and friends as well but there’s only so many times you can say similar things to people.

As a tool, I used it to help me to make a very difficult but correct decision and come through that situation and end up in a much better place.
