The new bin collection system is a nightmare. Anyone else?

We had our new bins three weeks ago.

The food bin wasn't collected for a fortnight during the heatwave and so everything in the bins had rotted, decomposed, fermented (weird alcohol smell to it). And, when they wre finally collected last week, the stench that arose and lingered in the street afterwards was phenomenally foul.

I've got a pretty strong stomach but even I struggled washing the food bin out afterwards. I've never smelt anything like it.

I think part of the problem is that the composting bags provided were really thin and tore easily. Part of the problem is that there's nothing else in the bin to soak up any liquid that comes from the rotting food.

Evidently, none of neighbours washed out their bin because, a week on, I can't open the windows because the whole house ends up smelling of it 😭

Has anyone else noticed similar? Is this just how life is now..?

It’s collected weekly here and I double bag the waste.

People are so dramatic on here. Plenty of areas have had food collections for years. I think it must be 6/7 years since we’ve had a food caddy and put it out in the brown bin. I’ve never had anything like all these issues some posters seem to have.

Well.it rained all evening yesterday and heavily. We've had heaven rain this morning and you can still smell it.

Tbh, thats what I assumed - that the rain would wash it away.

No, its definitely the bins. The smell in the street is the same smell as from my bin before I cleaned it.

I really think it was just the missed collection and the food waste sitting in the heatwave. The main issue is that I cleaned my bin afterwards but the majority of my neighbours haven't.

It wouldn't have been this bad if the bins had been collected or they'd been washed. Maybe someone did just pour the rotted sludge into the street.

So because it’s never happened to you, people are being dramatic? Why bother posting then

Food waste collections started here in late March.
We had one missed collection when our full bin wasn’t emptied and all others in the road were, despite it being left fully visible, and I was told to empty it into the household waste bin which had been emptied that day. This meant that some of the waste would’ve been bagged up for three weeks before being collected, not ideal in hot weather. After a bit of persuasion someone came back the following day.

During the Summer we’ve had an ongoing problem with flies and the outside caddy. It’s kept out of the sun with the handle in the locked position but when it’s opened and the lid is lifted to place a bag inside there are clusters of fly eggs around the rim. I bleach it every time I find any.
Our neighbour is having the same problem.

There’s a smaller truck here. One of the bin men walks around the streets emptying the food containers into a wheelie bin which is then emptied into the truck when full.

We’ve had it a few months. We had a few maggots once, I’d put some cat food in that flies had got to. Not a massive problem. It’s also when it was very hot.

problems have occurred when people put food waste I. Black bins and it sits for 3 weeks to be collected 🤢 if you use the food waste bin it doesn’t happen

I’d say the bin men have spilled the bin juice on the road and it’s been cooking every day since. The smell will go away when you get some good rain.

Print off a note and drop it round to everyone telling them to clean their bins lol

We've had this system for a few years now and it works well. Food waste is weekly and then alternate weeks for recycling /landfill. Garden waste is collected fortnightly, but is an additional paid for service. I would not be happy with fortnightly food waste collections.

I guess whether it's pointless depends on what they're doing with the food waste.

For us: "Food waste will be taken to an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Plant. This is a separate facility from where your garden waste will be composted.
At the AD plant, caddy liners are mechanically removed and used as a fuel to generate energy, and the food is broken down in the treatment process without oxygen present. This creates biogas which is captured to generate electricity. Fertiliser is also produced, which is used in farming.".

Had these food waste bins for years when I lived in London, collected every week (not every 2 weeks). I would purchase appropriate bags from Tesco (the sort that break down) and only occasionally had problems with maggots which can be dealt with quickly. Moved to Lincolnshire 4 years ago and it was crazy throwing food in the non-recycle (landfill) bin. This hot Summer my big wheelie bin has had maggots. Bugger to clean. Food bins have been delivered, collections start up in late October and the local community Facebook has BLOWN UP! I get people don't like change but food waste going to landfill when it can be utilised makes no sense to me. It works, honestly, just needs a little organisation.

We've had a food waste bin for three weeks. I've put it out each week - two out of three weeks it was not emptied so 66% failure rate from the Council. I emptied the full food waste bin into the large normal waste bin after the second failed collection as I did not want to risk it being uncollected again. I noticed very few of my neighbours using the food waste bins in previous weeks; mine was the only one I could see this week. I won't be using it again. Friends who have yet to receive their bins (should have been delivered earlier in the summer) are unwilling to try, especially given my experiences. No issues with smell externally, but the contents of the full bin had started to decompose and created a mess in the food waste bin, which will have smelled and attracted vermin in time.
