Bug found in washing machine door after wash, what could it be?

What’s this bug? It’s incisde my washing machine door. I live in County Durham. Ground floor flat. I took in a top off the line that had been dropped a few days ago and put that in the machine.

opened the door tonight after a wash and spin cycle to see… that.

stupidly I ended up screaming and panicking, I’ve got a phobia of crawly things.

Google says it’s a caterpillar/moth; chatGPT said it’s an American cockroach and to ring pest control.

i can’t and am considering leaving the house until i can get someone to remove it. And the washing machine.

what is it? Will it have a family?

Whatever it is, it is very dead and very clean.

My ecologist partner says it's a moth (probably a hawkmoth). Definitely not a cockroach.

That is definitely a moth. A wet moth.

I disagree. I think it is a moth, most likely a large yellow underwing moth. Very common in the UK. It has the typical long, folded forewings in a straw brown and reddish-brown head that you would expect (even tho it’s been thru the wash and spin cycle). If it had its wings open you might see some bright yellow hindwings with a dark border. They are very distinctive. Fancy a look, OP?

A cockroach body is flatter and more oval in shape. Their wings are leathery rather than scaly.

We routinely have the odd cockroach here (they live in the garden). The length you describe is more than double, if not triple the length of the cockroaches I've seen, including the American cockroaches we had year ago in a different house.

If it's as long as an index finger it's too big to be large yellow underwing. I'm sticking with convolvulus hawk-moth!

That's not a cockroach. Cockroaches don't have transparent veiny wings like that. They have more beetly wing covers type things.

I'd say some kind of moth too. Definitely not a cockroach. Moths are all over at the moment so could have got onto clothing or into the machine itself.

I feel your anxiety though OP. I have a ridiculous fear of mice so I'd be moving out if it was one of them rolling around in my washing machine! I hope you can get a friend or someone to get rid of it for you and then try not to worry.

Ah yes I had missed how big it is! Index finger length. Crikey. Think you’re right. But look at its rear end. That not a roach bum.

OP do a search for German cockroach. A pp provided a pest control site and this is what it appears to be so I would maybe contact whoever manages the flats or a pest control company for advice. Sorry this has happened but at least you know and can deal with it now.

It's 100% not a cockroach. It's a moth a big wet now dead moth.
