Sunday dinner in summer?

What’s your favourite thing to make for Sunday lunch/dinner when the weather is warm?

Personally I love a roast anytime but DH thinks it’s mad to eat gravy in summer…so we have to swap it up and I’m out of ideas for tomorrow.

Chat gpt offered me a charred nectarine salad as an idea which sounds pleasant but not hearty enough for a Sunday lunch imo 😂

It really is. My DH is on blood pressure meds and it may be a fluke but his readings are definitely better for drinking juice. It’s very versitile too we love beetroot roasted or pickled plus in a soup. Such a great vegetable! Gosh you know you’re old when you start talking beetroot.

I love cooking Sunday lunch - always have and always will.

I didn't cook very much at all during the heatwave and I did miss it.

I would still do the meat (in the slow cooker) or buy a rotisserie chicken but put out salads, crusty bread maybe some chips.

Or go for a Jamaican chicken, rice and peas, jeohnny cakes.

Do you know what, there’s been some lovely ideas but I’ve decided to go with the last simple one and roast a chicken but have it with chips/salad. I might spatchcock it and throw herbs on it to make it look fancy 😂

I did a roast yesterday just cos I felt like it! If it's too hot to cook then yeah I'm not doing it, but otherwise it's not about season.

That said, itch was scratched and I don't want to do another one today with the leftovers. Had been thinking of a curry but some of the ideas on here are tempting!

We're adults , so like every other day on Sundays we just eat what we fancy and can be arsed to cook.

I rarely do a roast anyway so it makes no difference to me what time of year it is.

My late father would insist on some kind of roast every Sunday no matter what the weather was, I came to hate it. When I moved out I refused to be tied to the bloody kitchen on a Sunday afternoon, my dad couldn’t believe it and would criticise me for it, I didn’t care.

When working full time and having just the weekends off I want the freedom to do as I please. I’m a good cook but hate cooking, I’d sooner do something I enjoy, 🤷‍♀️

if my husband doesn’t want it, he can make his own meal

Some Sunday mornings I think "ooh I'll make up a Paul Hollywood Foccatia bread" ,get the mixer to do the dough then go about what I want to do for an hour or two then shape it , next rise , additions. Decide what I can do with it ( pasta or salad with sides) and bake it , while demanding everyone admires this baked piece of garlic,olive oil, salty heaven .

We do a ‘summer roast’ which is essentially whatever roasted meat/bbq it, cous cous with roasted vegetables and pomegranate over the top, tzakiki style yogurt dressing and/or hummus. Maybe some pitta.

@BeMellowAquaSquid years ago Asda used to have frozen beetroot and goats cheese tarts they were lovley. I will never forget them

But it has to be home-grown for maximum sweetness and earthiness. So good.

Roast a chicken. Have it hot or cold with hot new potatoes and salad. Fruit and cheese if you want pudding.

Ribs, sweetcorn, Caesar salad and garlic bread is our big summer Sunday meal.

Do a roast but instead of a traditional one with gravy, why not try chicken with lemon and garlic?

Nigella's Vietnamese chicken and mint salad is a favourite here. It's quite hearty.

I also do salade Nicoise in the warm weather.

Mezze with everything you fancy all laid out on platters with lots of flatbreads/dips. Yum.

I roast a chicken in the air fryer (no point in having the oven on) and we have it with a huge Greek salad using home grown tomatoes and cucumbers, big slabs of feta cheese and olives etc., accompanied by crushed potatoes and a homemade creamy tarragon sauce. Delicious 😋
